Radical Nephroureterectomy and Cystectomy

I don't really know what to say. My Mum has had Transitional cell Cancer in her bladder for 8 years on and off. The last time she had treatment for this superficial cancer was at the beginning of March this year. This evening we were told she has stage 3 grade T4 cancer in her bladder. As such, she is having a Nephroureterectomy and cystectomy in 2 days time. She's very weak, has bad haematuria(sp) and kalemia. She lives in Cyprus and I love in Norfolk. She's currently in a private hospital in Cyprus that she and I can't afford. I tried to get her back to the UK but she's too ill to fly. She's stuck here, poorly and there's nothing I can so about it. Cancer is so unfair. I'd pay ANYTHING for me to have it, and as I sit here in tears I just don't know what to do for the best.

  • Hi there, welcome to the forum, not a place any of us would choose to be for the reason we are, but glad that it is here for us. I am so sorry to hear about your Mom facing this huge surgery. It is a tough one to have, but even worse when she's already so sick. Added to that, as you said, she is in a private hospital that is very expensive, but what choice do you have since she can't travel back home. It seems like it never rains but it pours. I take it she doesn't have medical insurance coverage, so what do they do if she can't pay for it? What a dilemna to be in.

I too, have bladder cancer and have had several BCG treatments, surgeries, etc., but now the next step for me too is to have my bladder taken out, so that will happen soon, I'm told. That surgery is huge for a woman, since they have to take everything out, i.e. the bladder, the cervix, uterus, part of the vagina, the tubes, and part of the bowel, where in a man, they only have to take out the bladder and prostate. I am wondering if I'm going to agree to the surgery since I also have had two big surgeries for lung cancer, and a colon re-section for cancer. This bladder cancer is not related to the other cancers. This cancer thing doesn't pick favorites for sure. Its' a terrible disease and so many people are affected by it, either we have it ourselves, or we have a loved one with it, or both.

Your Mom is so fortunate to have you as a support for her, although I know this must be very hard for you. I hope you have family or friends there to help you through this. Come on to the forum any time to share information on your Mom, and to let us know how you are managing.

Take care of yourself and sending you hugs as you take this journey with your Mom.
