Questions about cervical cancer

Hi

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer last week. I've had symptoms and I've had them for a while, in fact, one of the reasons I had the investigations was because I went to hospital in Feb thinking I had appendicitis. However, I've also had a lot of irregular bleeding, pain during sex, bleeding after sex etc for a few years. And I have a LOT of enlarged lymph nodes.

I have my CT scan on Wednesday and should find out stage etc within 2 weeks following that. But the doctor kept saying last week that it's very early stages and I'll probably just need another LLETZ treatment.

From what I've read, symptoms are rare in early stages. Has anyone here experienced symptoms in the early stages? And also I'm not sure how he could possibly know from a biopsy that it's very early stages? My question is, was he just trying to soften the initial blow? When in reality he doesn't know what stage it is? Or could he have some solid evidence from a biopsy to say it's very early?

I'd much rather know that I'm waiting to find out the stage, thinking positive but preparing for anything, than believe one thing to find out later it's rubbish.

  • Hi cookie334,

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. That must have come as a shock to hear those words.

I don't know a whole lot about cervical cancer, but I think right now you should try not to think the worst too much. My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer about three years ago now, and I remember when he was first diagnosed I spent day and night reading things about his type of cancer, the treatments involved and side effects to those treatments. I can say that oftentimes reading things online makes things seem a lot scarier than they actually are.

I've known some people in my life that have had to be checked for cancer and sometimes it's nothing to worry about, sometimes they need treatment, but you can never really know until you get those results.

Waiting those two weeks will seem like the longest you've ever lived, but hopefully at the end of these two weeks you'll be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Please keep us updated on what happens, and always feel free to come onto these forums and talk. There are a lot of supportive people on this site.
