Pushing for the right tests for suspected lymphoma

Hi all,

I will quickly explain my problem and any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have suffered from low level swelling and some pain in the left side of my neck and chin for around 9/10 months. I noticed this immediately as it felt odd and was worrying. My gp eventually referred me to ENT and I was sent for full bloods and an utltrasound. Upon physical examination the doctors felt only a small swelling with no visible lumps of lymph nodes.

At this point I will add my young son had leukaemia which was very difficult to treat and he has needed to have many years of intensive treatment for. I worked at a company which regularly used pesticides to fog fabric to avoid being eaten by moths. I have always worried that although it is never known, this may of been one of the triggers for my sons illness. Also, it is known that working around pesticides can be a link to certain cancers.

The ultrasound seemed fine but as the sonography pointed out, what dye could see seemed fine and she did explain that there are many lymph nodes not visible on ultrasound alone.

My bloods also seem fairly fine apart from one thing, a raised LDH level.

Now, the level is 317 and for me this seems like a little alarm bell going off. The doctor naturally tried to explain this as a mere blip and to retest the level. But I would like the MRI that was originally discussed to see if there is anything untoward that was missed in ultrasound.

Is this the right investigation or should I be asking for a CT and a sample to be taken to be analysed?

any advice greatly appreciated!

  • Hello

So sorry to hear you've had a rough time with your son in the past and understandably are a bit concerned now.

I would push for a CT if at all possible. Whilst there's a whole host of other things this could be until it gets ruled out you are going to be worrying.

I always think if something isn't normal for you, get it checked and follow up on it. You know yourself better than the docs.

From a personal point of view as someone with lymphoma they told me they couldn't find anything on my ultrasound and I had to push for additional scans before I was diagnosed. Not trying to scare you just saying sometimes they get hesitant to send you off for these things unfortunately which ultimately means it all takes so much longer to sort.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

    Rose

  • Thank you Rose,

Yes I agree, I think you do tend to have a sense of when something doesn’t feel right. I have always put my own health as last priority but I would like my doctor to investigate the pain and swelling a little further. They had originally talked of an MRI but if a CT is more appropriate then I will ask for this.

many thanks for your advice and kind words, I do not have a follow up until one months time but will post when I know more.
