  • Hi

I cannot speculate on what condition your grandad is in, the sudden rise in PSA would be a concern, but these people are well versed in getting to the root of the problem. It's to early to say what to expect but your grandad will be in good hands whatever the outcome, so although you may be stressing be patient let's hope you have good news.

  • Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for posting the question. When I was diagnose over six years ago my psa was 70.

It does normally take a while to have an MRI.

Your grandads psa might be high because he has an infection. Or it could be he may have prostate cancer. The psa reading is only a rough guide for it is not always that accurate. You can have a high psa and not have cancer or you can have a low psa and yet have cancer. They are working on finding a more accurate method.

Theymay want to do a digitl rectal examination. They can feel the prostate by putting a gloved fing up the back passage. The prostate should be smooth and soft. Mine was hard and lumpy.

They will also probably want to do a needle biopsy. They took ten samples from me and this proved I had prostate cancer It is the most accurate method.

Even if your grandad does have prostate cancer, the modern treatments are very good.I had two years of hormone therapy but six months after I started this I also had radiotherapy. My psa ended up the lowest they can measure at 0.01 so a very good result.

I wish you and your grandad all the best, Brian.
