Post Op mastectomy and reconstruction

Hi i had my op 17 days ago and only had drain remove 3 days ago. My surgeon saved my nipple but it has been very red now  the nipple its just very red. My surgeon said the top skin of it will probably fall off. I still have the Pico dressing with battery pack and continue to take Flucloxacill 500mg 4 times a day.

Is it natural to feel real fatigue, sick, breast feels tight, uncomfortable and less movement? Is there any chance this is due to infection?

Be grateful if anybody could help

Thanks in advance x

    Hi Sunshine,

Were you given any exercises to carry out after surgery? This should gradually ease off the stiffness in the breast and improve your movement. If you are still unsure that things are going as they should, phone your breast care nurse and ask for her advice. They are very helpful in cases like this and, should be able to judge whether or not there is any infection present.

I can only speak for myself in respect of your intense fatigue and nausea. I was first diagnosed 10 years ago with breast cancer. I had a second bout 9 years ago. I suffered with intense fatigue for 7 years after that. I still feel tired, but it's nothing like I was for those 7 years. Just give in to it and take a nap when you need it. Unfortunately, the nausea is still with me, but I've learnt to come to terms with it.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

How are you keeping ? I hope you did something nice for the Bank Holiday.

Was back with Surgeon today as she said she wants to hang on in there as nipple still not healed.

Let me come off the antibiotic as was making me feel sick. So still have pico dressing battery pack and have to go  back next Tuesday so hopefully things will  be  better by then.

    Best wishes and Hugs

    Hi Sunshine,

I'm keeping well at the moment thanks. I took advantage of the Bank Holiday to plant my bedding plants out.

I'm sorry to hear that you still have your pico dressing battery pack to contend with and that your nipple hasn't healed yet. However, I'm sure that you're glad to stop the antibiotics.

I will keep my fingers crossed for better news next Tuesday.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

I'm glad to hear you are ok at the moment and that you were able to plant your bedding plants.

Yea i will be glad to see the back of the Pico dressing and battery pack. Although i know at the moment i need it to promote healing.

Things are better  than my surgeon thought as had thought i may have to go back into theatre.  Thank God this is not the case now so thats a massive bonus so if Pico dressing sorts it so be it.

Yes hopefully next week will show more improvement. Although i am glad to have my life  . I will keep in touch.

    Best Wishes

    Hi Angela,

It's great to hear that your surgeon no longer thinks that you will have to go back to surgery again. I bet that this is a great relief to you.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for some improvement next week.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Angela,

Tiring though it is, there's no better medicine than spending time with your granddaughter. I'm glad to hear that your husband is looking after her though.

    Enjoy your time together.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jolamine

There is no way i could look after my granddaughter at the moment. Most i could do was her breakfast and heat  her lunch. Thankfully she can feed herself. My hubby even makes my lunch he is a real diamond. He has took time off work to look after me.

It is 3 weeks since my op yesterday . I have started to take sharp pains in the lower part of my breast is this usual?

How are you keeping ?anything nice planned for the weekend.

    You take care gentle hugs

    Hi Angela,

What age is your granddaughter? My two are now 7 and 11. I just wish that they lived a little closer to us, as I don't see them as often as I'd like to.

I am glad to hear that your hubby has taken time off work to look after you. If your pains are just transient, I wouldn't worry too much, but if you suspect an infection, contact your breast care nure and ask for her advice.

I had planned to put the last of my bedding plants in this weekend, but that needs the rain to stop first. Still, it's great to be able to do these things again - there was a long time when I couldn't.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
