Possible cancerous polyp in bowel told today

Hi

Been a tough day which started with CT scan results that unexpectedly came back showing a growth. I didn't cope very well in with the consultant really. I think im starting to get my head round things. Because there's been no sample of it via colonoscopy instead a virtual CT scan, I've not been diagnosed with cancer. But because it's 3/4cm one likelihood is that it is. It's in my large bowel and I've been told there's no evidence of it having spread into my liver or lungs. Im hanging a bit bcos It's getting removed but I won't know if its cancerous til after. I originally had a anal fissure after a cist was removed that they misagnosed as piles. I was then told over 12 months ago I had h pylori after a camera down my stomach. This was treated twice before it went. I put my anema down to this and possible stomach ulcers. My gastric health has been poor since and it's took longer than it should to get this last scan. The colonoscopy showed nothing but the CT scan has. I've pre op liver and lung scans to have, which doctor says are routine, he's not looking for cancer as CT scan showed no spread. Then 5/6 weeks before op.  I'm 45 and have no history in family.  Consultant was surprised it's there but obviously it's been with me a number of years. I hate operations but I just want it done now. I'm moving house next week so I've no choice but to be positive or it won't happen. I think it's been caught in time so I have to be thankful it's coming out

  • Hi Nige.

Welcome to the forum at this worrying time for you.

Although this is a shock, it seems to me that the medical team are on the case and are taking all the necessary steps. There is also good news that there is no evidence of spread. Indeed, it's not even certain that it is cancer.

I don't know anyone who actually likes having operations. But there are times when they're necessary and this is one of them. Modern anaesthetics are so much better than they were even 40 years ago. Induction is so rapid that you probably won't even know it's happening, and when you wake up you won't feel horribly sick, just a little woozy for a few minutes, but that wears off quickly.  I had a General Anaesthetic procedure a few weeks back, and within 10 minutes of waking up I was drinking tea and eating biscuits.

So good luck with the operation. I hope it all goes well for you. Please keep us updated. In the meantime we're here whenever you need a chat.

  • Thanks alot I'm going to try to throw myself into the house move but six weeks is a long time to get through. I'm hopeful but obviously scared at same time. I'll find my positivity soon I'm sure

  • I know what it's like to wait for surgery.  I was diagnosed with early prostate cancer in July 2010, and I had a follow up MRI, etc, just to check it hadn't spread, which it hadn't.  But then I ran into problems with my blood pressure, which was too high for them to safely operate.  This is something I inherited from my father, who suffered from high BP all his life.  It took megadoses of anti-hypertensives and around 5 months of treatment before they were prepared to operate.  Fortunately, early prostate cancer that hasn't spread is one of those things that doesn't require rapid intervention and the delay did no harm. I'm still doing OK now and I've not needed any follow up treatment.

  • Im waiting for a call from my consultant because i was on my own when I was told and didnt take it in.

I know I'm not going to go anywhere anytime soon but its not knowing til after surgery if it's actually cancer or not that is hard. I'm up and down on an hourly basis.

Just want to hear from him again say that it's not spread and it's treatable. I've my pre op scans to have then probably another few weeks before operation.

    Thanks for replying

  • It's always best to take someone with you, but of course that's not always possible and sometimes these things hit unexpectedly, like a bolt from the blue.

Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi, I know this is a year old, but just wondering what the outcome was for you Nigel?  I was told I had a 4cm polyp today, and got to wait to have it removed, worrying it may be something more sinister.

    thanks

  • Hi nige ...I've been having a rough time since I had an hysterectomy in 2017 with which I had complications after surgery ... I started having severe bowel spasms on the right hand side but was put down too IBS n scar tissue due too the complications with the hysterectomy..  then I started having severe chest infections the winter on 2017 I had 9 but chest xray was clear at that time ...then I had a really bad time with my chest from Aug 2018 ...I ended up having 12 lots of antibiotics but they sent me too have another xray which this one showed chronic inflammation n chronic infection an I ended up at my local walk in centre on nebulizers too ...well they queried copd an refered me on too a respiratory specialist...which I have had a whole lot of breathing tests done n I had an MRI done ...which when i went too see him the full report wasnt back but he had a quick look at it n the MRI as shown a thickening on one or both of my lungs but couldn't tell me anymore at that time and I have an official diagnosis of copd ...then not long ago I had a bleed out of my back passage on an off for a week ..bowel movents had suddenly changed ...then there was a lot of mucus an something that looked a bit weird like lining of some description..an another thing anyway i ended up having too have a colonoscopy which was on Saturday the 4th of may ..I did all the bowel prep like I was supposed too but unfortunately it didn't do its job that well ...but he found a 35mm / 3.5cm polyp when he was on the way back out as everything wasnt clean enough...n he is expecting to find more now ...so basically I've got too go back on the 10th of June too have another colonoscopy ...I an only 37 years old aswell xx
