Pip payment

Recently been  diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and a friend advised I'm entitled to pip, does anyone know if this is correct and if so how it works?

  • A cancer diagnosis does not automatically make you eligible for PIP. If you're receiving chemo or recovering from it, you are automatically eligible for ESA.

PIP depends not on your diagnosis but on what you are able to do. There's a massive form to fill in and it must be answered using the correct terminology. The decision-makers are aware of each disease and norms of progression. In some cases, such as mine, I was awarded PIP both for mobility and care and did not have to have an assessment. Bear in mind that I frequently don't have the energy to even wash my face.

If you intend to make a claim it's worth investigating the rules on the internet, starting with gov.uk. You'll also be able to find the advice given to assessors and decision-makers. Also, it may be worth getting help with filling in the form; Various agencies offer such help, although they were no help to me.

    Best of luck. Regards

  • Hi Gaz It depends on your circumstances and diagnosis. You would be entitled to ESA if you have to give up work and have paid National Insurance contribution in the last 12 months. You can also get part if your income has reduced below a certain level and working less then a set number of hours. This income is taxable but while you receive it your national Insurance contributions are paid. PIP is to help with additional costs that you may incur to help you with every day life. This is not dependent on income or savings. I was put in touch with McMillians at our local citizens advice bureau and they helped with the forms. Depending on your diagnosis you may have to be assessed for PIP. As Taff has advised check out the government website.
