Phone call today from docs all a bit of a blur...

Hi I'm Ade and I'm 40.

Been a bit achey in the arms and legs last few weeks. I'm never really ill and feel fine pretty much, been busy with work which is a physical job and thought it's probably just from work. Wouldn't say I have had any other symptoms of illness, except severe anxiety which I've always had.

But for 2 months I've been getting mouth and tongue ulcers all over driving me mad, I'm lucky if I get a few days ulcer free, their not something I've ever suffered with. I finally went to the docs on Tuesday about it.

Wednesday I was booked in for a blood test as he thought maybe a iron or vitamin deficency.

Got a call Thursday to say I have a high white cell count and they were doing further tests.

Today I get a call and it was a bit of a blur tbh.. he said my white cell was 26 or something? He is booking me in for a bone marrow test? It will be in about 10 days time, a needle in the hip I think he said. He asked me if i could come in and talk face to face and i told him to just tell me straight. I wasn't really taking it when he said those dreaded words so sorry if vague.

He mentioned leukemia, I asked could it be anything else, he just said it needs urgent attention.

Now I know to wait for results but is looking as bad as it currently sounds, I felt he was holding back.

  • Hello Ade1979,

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and thank you for sharing your story and I hope that you will hear from others on the forum who have been in a similar place before. It must be a rather anxious time for you as you are waiting for these important results. It is normal after receiving a phone call like this to feel that you could not take in all the information you were given on the phone and that it was all a bit of a blurr and that you cannot quite remember what was said to you. I hope you find out more very soon and that you get some definite results and that you get to see him face to face to discuss these.

As you said, all you can do for now is wait and this waiting game can be a particularly stressful time, a time during which it may be tempting to look things up on Google but when it is best to actually keep busy and distracted if you can. Whatever you are dealing with, it sounds like you are in good hands and that the doctors are being very thorough in their investigations.

Wishing you the very best of luck with that bone marrow test. I hope it all goes well and that you get some clarity on all this very soon.

    Best wishes,
