PET scan referral

Hi all

I've had some tests (bloods, ultrasound and CT with contrast) carried out over the last few weeks to try determine why lymphnodes in my neck have swollen as there is no obvious cause, also have lost over 10kg in a year by the gps records of being weighed at appointments. I didn't realise it was that much as I don't weigh myself and didn't try, I put it down to a stressful 2022.

I've now been referred for a needle biopsy and PET scan (they will be on different days, its not a PET guided biopsy), as the CT with contrast apparently showed many more enlarged lymphnodes that we weren't aware of.

Just wanted to ask if it is normal practice for a PET scan to be done before results of a biopsy have confirmed anything?

I have had (unfortunately) some family and friends go through cancer over the years and from asking them, a PET scan has only ever been performed at different times in their journey but always after a biopsy had confirmed cancer was present or after treatment.

  • I'm sorry to hear you've been referred for further tests to try and find out the cause of your swollen lymph nodes Greenleaf31.

I know this must be scary but I hope it helps to know that many of our members have been in a similar position, so you are not alone, and hopefully it won't be long until you receive some support and advice from them and get to hear about their experiences.

If you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help.

We're thinking of you Greenleaf and hope your test results are able to provide you with some much needed answers and peace of mind.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Greenleaf

i wouldn't read too much Into that - both biopsy and PET scan are very important and vital tools in order to figure out what's going on with your lymph nodes.

I had my PET scan before my biopsy results, I don't think it's a major issue. PET scans indicate unusual sugar activity in your body and its cells, and a biopsy pinpoints any issues with the lymph nodes themselves. Both sort of go hand-in-hand

all the best and if you need any support message me through this forum - I've been there and done that

  • Thank you so much for the replies!

I've had a call from the hospital just this morning to say they've decided to put the biopsy on hold until the PET scan results are back and then have a biopsy if it's needed and I'll have the scan hopefully early next week just waiting for the call with my appointment.

Fingers crossed it won't be needed! So easy to get anxious and paranoid over thinking everything when you're playing the waiting game isn't it

  • Most definitely - just try to do/watch/read/eat things you enjoy and keep your mind occupied

    hope all goes well

  • Just a quick update, had PET scan, got a call this morning to say I've been booked to see a consultant next week to discuss results. Forgot to ask what type of consultant and no scan results given over phone but from checking the hospital website this doctor is down as a respiratory consultant. No idea why I've been sent to him but hopefully as he isn't an oncologist it will be good news? Only a week to go to finally have some answers, I hope!
