Peritoneal cancer

Hi

i recently had big change in bowel habits and bad stomach cramps which my GP said were anxiety symptoms. Three weeks ago was admitted to hospital with suspected appendicitis. Had blood tests, x rays and ct scan confirmed wasn't appendicitis but they found ovarian cyst, a suspicious lump in the peritoneal and thickening in colon. Was warned it's possibly peritoneal cancer which is always stage 3/4. Had colonoscopy few days ago - took biopsies of polyps in my colon. Now waiting for a laparoscopy and gynaecologist said may remove ovaries and Fallopian tubes. Big problems sleeping- keeping busy during the day and doing a relaxation app at bedtime. Also lost lot of wait. Saw GP Firiday- busy surgery- she hadn't read my notes and was all a bit rushed. She gave me temazapan. Taken it for two nights. Slept a bit better but still up at 4am. Anxiety levels through the roof! Any advice on how to cope????

  • Hi there - so sorry you've had this diagnosis it's bound to be a worrying time for you - you wouldn't be human if you weren't anxious. I can identify with your anxiety but for different reasons & it can take over your life at a time when you just feel you want to be able to cope. I would certainly keep taking the temazapan because sleeping is important to reducing anxiety levels & I think when they get further into your system they will help even more.

There is 1 technique which is useful for reducing anxiety - breathe in through your nose for 7 seconds & breathe out through your mouth for 11 seconds. It does work & makes you feel a bit calmer. You say you are keeping busy & that's a really good thing to do & spending time with other people is a good distraction if you can manage to.

The main thing I think is to do what you've done here & talk about how you feel (don't put on a brave face). I'm sure other people will be along here to offer some support. I wish there was a magic formula because it is awful & getting the results will reduce that stress when you know for sure what you are facing. Hopefully something that can be sorted out quickly for you. Good luck to you. x
