People with One kidney/kidney removal???

Hiya, me again,

just wanted to ask a couple questions to people who have had a kidney removed etc

i had kidney cancer stage 3 chromophobe and had my right kidney removed on December 11th 2019.

i was just wondering if it's normal to have like cramps where my kidney used to be, it feels like toe cramp but inside my body where it spasms and I just have to wait a few seconds for it to go.

secondly, did the surgery cause anyone to gain weight or find losing weight after kidney removal much harder?

i gained 14lbs - a stone through it all

and I am having a really hard time losing weight now

i have since given up smoking when I was first diagnosed which is great and also decided to get into shape but it took a month to lose 5lbs and before all the surgery if I dieted or ate well I would lose more. I'm only 27 and I used to eat thousands of calories a day but now am doing 1600-1800

With no chocolate or bread and not eating after 7pm.

am I going mad or does having a kidney removed mess up hormones and stuff for a while and weight gain and losing it is harder?

i didn't have my adrenal gland removed.

thanks in advance!!

  • Hi Amber,

Sorry to read you're having these issues  - although it's good to hear you've given up smoking and are beginning to achieve the weight loss you're after.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be much help in terms of your questions - it may be best at some stage to speak with your doctor so you can know if these effects are to be expected or not.

Or do also feel free to post in our 'Ask the nurses' section of Cancer Chat as they may be better placed to advise.

Otherwise if anyone here has any similar experience then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
