Pancreatic cancer spread to the liver

My mum was diagnosed just after Xmas with pancreatic cancer that had spread to her liver, she has had a stent put in . Which has got rid of the jaundice and is feeling a lot better, she doesn't eat a lot and the weight loss is drastic. I'm just not sure what to expect as time goes on! She has turned chemo down as we were advised it would only give her a couple of extra months.

  • Hi Angela,

my husband has duodenal cancer. Similar to pancreatic. He has mets on liver and it's incurable and inoperable. He had a stent fitted. He is having chemo. Had to stop half wat through cycle 1 because of adverse effects. He was hospitalised with dehydration etc. Started cycle 2 yesterday- so we'll wait and see how this goes.

He, too, has lost a lot of weight- almost 3 stone in less than 3 months.. it's hard to know what to do for the best- we were told he had only a few months without chemo, so praying chemo is worth it.

Hope your mum is coping - and you, too. There are days I feel tearful and alone, though I put "the face" on and keep smiling!!!

  • HI,yeah mum was told her cancer was inoperable too, She did ask how long she had,but the doctor said he didnt like to say as he was oftern wrong. From what i have read it seems like if it was gone to another organ then probably 6 months from diagnosis. My mum is 70 so she didnt want to spend time in hopital having chemo and feeling unwell when she could be with her family spending some quality time. Her main problem seems to be the amount of gas she gets, which is uncomfortable and seems to spend the frst hour of the morning burping ,but is painful.fingers crossed for your husband. I try and keep a smile on my face too, and hope the next day is going to be a "feel Well" day.

  • Hi Angela,

how is your mum doing? My husband started second cycle of chemo a week past Friday and is coping better than last cycle. He's on a reduced dose. Only side effect so far is extreme fatigue. We're going away for a few days next week with our son and granddaughter. Hoping he manages,ok.

this probably sounds silly but husband found bicarbonate of soda in glass of water really helped with gas.

    keep your chin up.

  • Hi Angela. We didn't get away last week as my husband got taken into hospital with sepsis. In for three nights and taken off chemo again.

Saw  oncologist yesterday and husband to start cycle 3 of chemo tomorrow plus going to give him steroids to try to improve energy levels. I was glad to hear this has helped your mum. At the moment we're not really able to get out and about as he is so tired.

Fingers crossed for cycle 3! Hope you continue to enjoy time with your mum xx

  • Hi ,Sorry to hear you didnt get away,i expect it was what you both needed aswell .How is cycle 3 going ?

Mum is still doing well, she came off the steroids after the 2 week perscription ended, even thou she has her appertite back now,i think the steriods helped with her energy levels, which seem to have gone down abit,so going to see if she can go back on them or try something else. she seems to be feeling well and no pain,so we are being able to go out more, and my dad is less worried about leaving her alone, bless him.

    keep strong and take care.

    xx

  • Hi there. John coping better with this cycle- the steroids definitely seem to help. We've been able to get out and about and even had a long walk on Easter Monday. Glad your mum is doing well, too.

its such a worry and I don't think I ever really relax- always watching to make sure he's ok, taking meds on time etc.

John is having a midway CT scan next week, then we see oncologist the following week to get the results. At the moment another 3 cycles of chemo are planned but suppose this will be dependant on results.

Wishing you, your mum and dad all the best xx
