Painful Tongue

I had two tongue biopsies taken on Monday with stitches on top of tongue and under the tongue, I’m finding it hard to cope with the pain, has anyone got any remedies that I might find to help with the pain

  • Welcome to the forum.

Boots own brand mouth ulcer gel is packed full of local anaesthetic.  It is far more effective at stopping pain than Bonjela.  But of course it is only available at Boots.

While you're there, you might find soluble co-codamol helpful as well. Ask to speak to the duty pharmacist for advice.

Best of luck. I hope the biopsy results show nothing sinister.

  • Hi

You have my heartfelt sympathies. I had this twice. I found dispersable co-codamol & liquid Ibuprofen the best combination ( codiene does constipate though). Warm saline rinses do sooth a bit too. Take painkillers 30 min before trying to eat helps as well. i was able to eat quite well by day 5 but the palate biopsy was a different story.

Non brand name are half the price and work just as well. Buy from pharmacy in Stores.

I had surgery about 3 weeks ago and stitches in tongue & palate are still there giving me gip. It hurts to eat but I am determined not to live on liqiud supplements.

The underside of the tongue seems to cause more pain must be more nerve supply in that area.

In hospital I refused liqiud morphine as it hurt mouth & throat so much.It just made me groggy anyway. So I stuck with paracetamol & Ibuprofen, same when I got home.

NHS need to address pain for these procedures a bit more, simple paracetamol just doesnt cut it for some folks.

Take care hope you find some relief xx
