Pain under arm and in breast

Hi

im 43 yrs old abs for the last 4 weeks I have been experiencing a pain in my left arm pit which had now spread to a pain in my actual breast as well - it feels like sometimes it is going straight through the centre of my nipple/breast and is a sharp stabbing pain. I’ve also noticed pain in my right armpit but not as regular  the pain in my arm pit is like a burning pain and sometimes tingles

I can’t find any lumps in my arm pit or in my breast - I’m very flat chested so I can only feel the muscle/chest wall but both my breasts are really tender and sore - something I’ve never had at all even when I have my period

I’ve been to the gp but he didn’t even examine me and said it could be hormonal or related to a gastric condition that I’m currently having investigated (reflux or gastritis) so was quite dismissive

should I be worried? I feel like as I’m already being seen about my gastric issues that he thought I was being a hypochondriac

the pain in my armpit is worse when I reach out for something or stretch but I don’t think it’s muscular (I rarely exercise or lift anything heavy)

im worries if it’s something serious and should keep pushing to go back and see another GP?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

  • Hello Charlotte and welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear of your worries.  While I can understand that your GP did not consider this to be caused by anything serious it has not helped you deal with the pain you describe.  It may be just a matter for pain killers but - whatever it is - it has been causing you pain fior some time and you should have been given something in the way of help to deal with it.  I think I would be inclined to see another GP in your shoes; I am not somebody who has ever done this and I must add that I have no reason to think it anything serious - but it is painful and you need some help to deal with it. I consider this to be a reasonable course of action.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Thank you for your reply. I’m sure (fingers crossed) that it’s nothing serious but I haven’t had my worry’s out to bed. I wonder whether I’m peri menopausal but when I suggested this I was told by a nurse I’m too young... my periods are all over the place, I’m no longer on the pill and so there’s no medical regularity to them and ive put weight on but the nurse won’t do the test for this or take it further

i think my gastro problems don’t help as the pain can travel to upper abdomen and lower abdomen...

i know I need to go back to the gp abs I want to see a female gp if I can as I believe that would benefit me

    tjanks again

  • Hi again.  I think that would be sensible.  They must be used to people doing this and there should not be any hassle with your request.  Then at least you can feel more confident and hopefully get something that will relieve your pain.  Annie

  • Hi. I'm experiencing something similar. Am 44 years old. Did you ever get to the bottom of it?

  • Hi

have you had any answers on yours ? I'm waiting my referral and terrified.

  • Hi. I went to see my GP. She said my left breast felt lumpy and referred me to the breast cancer clinic. My husband has private medical through his work so I called them when I got home. They said for breast issues I didn't need a referral from the NHS and they gave me an appointment that every same evening.

I saw the consultant first and he also felt something in the left breast but he thought it was breast tissue. A mammogram followed and then a breast ultrasound. I was so relieved when the doctor told me its just breast tissue caused by hormonal changes. They're not sure why some women get it, but his words to me were...stress kills the breast. He also suggested that I start taking evening primrose oil and also wear good supportive bras without underwire.

Just something else to point out. I started the mini pill this year because of my age and one of the side effects is breast pain. I stopped it two days before I went to see the doctor and I've noticed a big improvement in my pain. I still have some discomfort but the pain in my nipple is completely gone.

I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry.

I pray you also get a good result too!

  • I have no lumps but a burning pain and a bit swollen by armpit was that similar to your symptoms?

  • I would say tenderness under the left armpit yes. Sore to the touch. Possibly a bit of swelling. Pain in my nipple. And sometimes burning pain. If the GP couldn't find any lumps are they just referring you as a precaution?

  • Mine was put down to hormonal changes. It went away and has come back recently ... not sure whether to get it rechecked. No lumps abd bumps but left breast is larger than right and pain again under my arm

  • Hi, glad you are ok.

im nearly 39 and have exactly the same. I am at the Breast clinic on Wednesday for a scan.
it's like density and burning under left armpit and breast feels sensitive. Had them checked by gp and no lumps fingers crossed all is ok x
