Pain in neck.... no other symptoms

I don't even know what I want from this post. Maybe just someone to listen and reassurance?! Basically since January of this year I had a few colds and an ear infection. With the sore throat I noticed I had neck pain. Only on my left side (my ear infection was on the right not left). It's basically more or less all over my left side this pain is. Not unusual when you have a cold I guess. Anyway. Once the flu season was over, since then I've had this random neck pain flare up at least 2/3 times a month. It hurts in my ear and I get a slight sore throat as well. Now the good points are that I don't seem to have any other worrying symptoms. Definitely not losing weight. No night sweats. I've been checked by 2 doctors. There's no lumps and no swelling. To me, when I feel it does feel like the left side is inflamed compared to the right but to the doctors and my husband they can't feel a difference. I have no trouble swallowing. I had bloods which checked my thyroid which was normal. My iron was a little low which my doctor suspected was due to heavy periods so I've been a bit fatigued but I'm also a working mum of 3. I guess my voice is a bit hoarse sometimes but I'm also terrible at stashing hydrated. The other good thing is that this hasn't changed. So it's not gotten worse. Basically, I just have this random pain which flares up in my neck/ear and sometimes

throat at least twice a month and no one can figure out why. My doctor booked me an ultrasound which is tomorrow and I'm so so scared. I have GAD anyway which doesn't help but I also have a friend, 28 years old and she was diagnosed with lymphoma so that really doesn't help. Like I said I don't know what I'm looking to gain from this post, I know the anxiety will be making things a lot worse but I know I'm not imagining this. When this flares up I can feel like something there sometimes when I talk, eat or turn my neck a certain way. Feels like it's next to my windpipe somewhere? I don't know :-( everyone is telling me because I've had it since jan and it doesn't make me unwell or anything it can't be anything serious but I just get so worried :(

  • Hi MrsMM89, sorry to hear what you are going through, but the good thing is your being tested and everything is coming normal! I'm in the same boat as you, lots of blood tests, some scans (including a head CT!) but all are normal. I'm waiting for an ultrasound on my neck but I don't have a date. But like you, I get strange feelings in my neck, on my right side mostly and the occasional sore throat. But as it isn't progressive I'm getting less and less convinced about throat cancer, but I am a little worried about lymphoma.

Totally get the worry, and my wife is telling me it'll be fine, but I still have this nagging doubt and find myself googling all the time which really doesn't help. Try and stay positive, I think it really does help.

Hope the scan goes well tomorrow

  • Thanks so much for the response, it's nice to know someone understands how it feels. The thing with my friend is she had an actual lump on her neck which I also don't have so I'm trying to stay positive as well. I hope you get sorted soon as well.

  • I do have what appears to be a hard lymph node in front of my ear, but it's not been checked out by any medical professionals and I've only just noticed it 4 days ago. So either I've missed it, as have the doctors and the head CT or it's new and wouldn't account for the last 3 months of symptoms. Either way I'll be bringing it up when I go for my ultrasound.

  • Hey, sorry to hear about your symptoms!

I'm also having similar symptoms with my neck. Also get a sore ear, lump in throat feeling which has been ongoing since April.

Then found a lump this week under my ear lobe. Doc seemed concerned and I'm waiting on blood results before going back to see them next week.

So panicked because everything I've seen says a hard lump which is embedded and doesn't move isn't good!

  • That's my worry as well! But got to try and stay positive!

It sounds like I'm a couple of steps ahead of you at the moment, so I'll let you know how I get on. Hopefully it will be good news and that'll offer you some reassurance

  • Hi. I was wondering if you ever found out the reason for your symptoms. I’m having something similiar. Persistent mild sore throat. Same with ear. Most recently been having abit Of pain in right side of neck. Got bloods done last week. All normal. Waiting on a referral now but it could be a long time unfortunately.

Guess im looking abit of reassurance.

    Thanks Derek
