Pain following implant reconstruction

I had a mastectomy and implant reconstruction on 3rd June. I had a drain for two weeks and a PICO dressing applied a week ago. Since then i have experienced dicomfort and pain in the reconstruction and a weird rippling sensation when bending down or trying to sit up and when walking. I realised that no one had told me what to expect so this might be all perfectly normal or could be a sign of something more siinister. I have attended the walk in clinc to report this as i wondered if there might be a fluid build up foloowing the drain removal however the did not seem overly concerned. To be honest i would like to hear from anyone who can tel me of their own experiences as i feel veyy alone with all this

  • Hi Susan

I had left side mastectomy and reconstruction with lymph node removal on 15th June. I  am now 6 weeks post op and just this week feel “normal”. Do you have a breast nurse looking after you?  I did and had to go and see her last week as I too felt a rippling sensation. Did the walk in centre do an ultra sound on the fluid? They are reluctant to drain the fluid unless absolutely necessary for risk of infection. I’m sorry that you are feeling alone as the treatment and support I have received has been excellent. I think you need to contact the breast care unit or maybe McMillan.

  • Dear PJR,

Thank you for your response. I went to the walk in centre yesterday and had the PICO dressing changed. I mentioned the rippling sensation and discomfort which they said may be down to some fluid although the breast on examination seemed soft. The walk in nurse is not my assigned cancer nurse although a registrar asked me to come back on Thursday morning and if the rippling continues they will do an ultra sound. They did say the fluid would eventually disperse. Is this what happened to you?

I think it feels slightly better this afternoon although this may well be wishful thinking!

  • Hi,

i had a lumpectomy and The rippling sensation you mention sounds very much like cording....it's a very strange feeling, it took a good couple of weeks of gentle stretches to sort it out....xx

  • Hi there. Apologies just to note my op was 15 May not June. Yes I did have fluid and they said it would disperse it is still there one week but it but hasn’t got any bigger. Good luck tomorrow they will sort it out for you I’m sure.
