Pain by left Breast on upper side near armpit

Hello, i have had a pain not in my breast tissue but its beside my breast imbedded in the tissue beneath it to left handside. I have read many others here have this too, my sympathy goes out!  Ive had this since 2015, so 5 years now & still concerned about it. Ive had mamograms which were excruciatingly painful & made me yell out when this breast was pressed & i wondered if my breast muscle was ripped... result was no sign of cancer but to be honest this isnt in the breast. I have autoimmune problems 20 yrs & dr said it was probably another autoimmune condition & an inflamation of the rib cartilage. Theres one particular spot which hurts. Ive large breasts & removed the metal bone that side. It aches all the time & im at a loss what to do. Any advice id be so grateful. I feel the dull pain has increased & i can feel it through to my shoulder blade

  • Welcome to the forum patienceisme although I'm sorry to read about the pain you've been contending with.

If you're not happy with what the doctor has suggested maybe you could try getting a second opinion from a different doctor? You can find out more here but I hope some of our members will offer their thoughts and suggestions to you soon as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello, I hope you’re well! I’ve just read this post and can sympathise so much! I am currently having the exact same problems and having a pressure like sensation just above my breast and towards my armpit. I’ve had it for a week now and putting off going to the GP, purely based on the fact I don’t want to waste their time if this could be hormonal. Sometimes the pain sharpens and feels like an awful stabbing pain. Any recommendations?
  • Thank you so much to respond to my post. I apologise i missed this due to the circumstances of lock down in April. I must have just not seen it. I will take your advice & try see another Dr. Thanks for your concern.

  • Thank you to write. so sorry to hear you have anxiety with this pain. Its a difficult time with seeing Drs, i agree, & i feel the same about bothering them with the Covid19 situation.

Im not good at going to the Drs to start off with.
I hope you get help. Mine is still bad, but im sure anxiety doesnt help it.

  • Yes I also have the pain you described. I thought on a few occasions I pulled a muscle because it was painful to beathe. This has gone and I am left with this familiar pain in the left breast, under the arm  and deep inside. I have had it before and it went. I think it could be from indigestion as I have reflux after eating.

  • I have a pain very similar to what you describe for the last few weeks.  It comes and goes and is sharp and stabbing on occasion. Did you ever get any answers as to what it could be?

  • Hello Linda

By pure luck i did. I was fortunate to see a very good NHS physiotherapist & she examined me properly.. taking off my upper clothes & saw i had a misalignment in my upper spine. So she said that the reason i was getting this pain was because my vertebrae was causing nerve pain right through my ribs radiating from this area right round to the front ribs under my breast. She worked hard on a few occassions pulling and needing the vertebrae & im on an exercise regime to stretch out these problem areas. Due to my work i spend hours hunched up year upon year, so i cant tell you how happy i have been to have improvement & its not life threatening.
However, i still have discomfort in my breast as i have a large benign lump in it, but at least the other pain has been helped. I was just lucky as she rarely diagnoses this & i was lucky it was her. Good luck. Hope this helps you best cathy

  • Hi Cathy

    Thanks for your reply.

Did your pain come and go and was it quite sharp on occasion? I find I have certain tender spots when I press on them where the breast meets the ribs on the outer edge. I have very large breasts which I'm sure pull diwn on the muscles and coincidentally, like you I have a spinal misalignment which I only found out about when I was 32 (I'm 56 now) after xrays due to a road traffic accident. I have a curvature of the spine called Scheuermann's kyphosis which always occurs at adolescence and at that time I became very round shouldered. I suppose the combination of this curvature along with very heavy breasts might be causing the problem. I hadn't thought about that at all. Plus, like you I often work hours in a certain position which isn't ideal.

  • Hi Linda

yes i too have v large breasts & im slight.
My pain has been to left hand side under breast, dull ache and often stabbing pain. I have ME/ FMS/ so i live with pain so often hard to understand where trouble spots are. Between my shoulder blades is def a pain area.
We will all have slightly different pains as we are all different but it sounds right to me its the radiating nerves from spine round the entire rib to the front. However, also bras cause pain so thats always an added problem which you may have too.
i hope it helps! Best cathy

  • Hi Cathy.

Yes, bras can be a problem. I seem to have more aches and pains  after I've put it on and not at night when I've taken it off. I might have to try one of those sports bras to see if that makes a difference.

I was reading last night about  trigger points of pain with myofascial pain syndrome and it seemed to correspond with what I experience.  Certain areas are painful to the touch and seem to change position from day to day. My pain is on the right side.

Not easy having heavy breasts. They are bound to pull on the chest wall and ligaments and affect any spinal problems too.

I'm glad you got your pain sorted. I really ought to see a physiotherapist to sort out my posture (which is not good) as that can cause problems too.
