Overthinking???

Hello everyone. I'm sorry I have come to this, especially when so many of you are going through difficult times. I'm in a bit of a muddle. In April I came down with a head cold, negative Covid test, but developed a cough which lasted 8 weeks. I contacted the doctor who prescribed me some antibiotics, thinking it might be a bacterial infection. The cough reduced in severity but still continued. Come end of June I caught Covid, cough not being too much of an issue, mainly sore throat, however since recovering from Covid this persistent cough has returned. Same symptoms as earlier in the year along with localised chest pain in left side, which was also the case earlier in the year. I contacted the Dr again who prescribed me another round of antibiotics as well as a chest Xray. Xray was clear and now diagnosed with long covid.

So after all this I am wondering whether its worth pursuing another appointment? If I had no cough prior to Covid I would be more comfortable with the current diagnosis. However I smoked 20 a day for 12 years, given up for 2 years now, and had a pulmonary embolism last year which had apparently no known cause.....Am I just overreacting? Or is there reason to continue to follow this up?

Thank you so much

  • Hi pickle88 I don't think you are over reacting, lots of thngs can cause a long ongoing cough especially things like athsma but your GP should rule out the most serious things first. I don't know if it would be worth you asking for a referral to a respiratory clinic or at least an athsma nurse at the surgery. it is of course possible that you may have had a non symptomatic covid earlier and developed the cough but on going for this amount of time and after antibiotics should be looked into further. If the cough is perstistant then follow it up even if it's to rule out the nasties.

  • Thank you so much for the advice. I rang my GP today and he agreed, although there aren't any red flags, it's best to get a CT scan, just to be on the safe side as X-rays can sometimes miss tiny details. So I'm happy with that. Thank you again and take care x
