Oral biopsy - results wait time?

Hi all,

I've got no idea if this varies significantly by area so don't know if it's a pointless question. I had biopsies from my tongue and inside cheek last Monday, I don't know why but I expected them to say results would take 1-2 weeks, but they said its normally 2-3 and right now it's actually 4-6 weeks. Does anyone know if it is actually taking this long?! They didn't book the follow up appointment there and then so I'm expecting to receive it in the post, hoped to have had it through by now. I don't know how I'll manage if it does actually take that long. As much as I try with distraction and keeping busy, it's just not working, my mind is constantly on it.

If anyone has any recent experience of results coming quicker than they say then it'll just give me a little bit of hope that the torture may end sooner! Pretty pointless post to be honest, guess I'm just struggling.

Thanks!

  • Hi MrsA123 and welcome to the community.

The pandemic has generally made the wait for results longer but it can also differ depending on what part of the country you're in.

Hopefully some of our members will share their experiences with you soon but fingers crossed it won't be too long until you get the results.

In the meantime, I hope the tips on this website will help you whilst you wait.

    Kind regards,

  • I had an oral biopsy on 16th March in Newcastle and I'm still waiting they said 2 weeks but now its nearly 4 weeks I am too waiting for results by post.

I rang the hospital on Thursday and they still weren't back from the lab.

Hope this puts your mind a rest that I've had the same wait

  • I had biopsies done on the 3rd March and I am still awaiting my results, I understand how anxious it can be.

    Best wishes,

    Jem

  • Hiya, thanks for your reply, I'm not sure if it puts my mind at rest or not to be honest haha! But grateful for the info definitely. It seems so absurd to have to wait so long for something like this. For me if it takes as long as they've said it will then it'll be five months since my initial referral from the dentist to find out whether it's malignant or not, that's just mad. It feels so unfair. I'm just moaning though, I know. I've been a bit more settled about it for the last 5-6 days to be honest, I think I reached my breaking point with anxiety and some kind of self defense/protection has kicked it which I'm thankful for! Hoping your results are all clear x

  • So sorry you're having such a long wait! Such a cruel time. Hopefully your results are in very soon and all clear for you x

  • Thank you, I rang the GP again they said to ring back o Thursday.. They said there is something on the system but she is not sure if the report is all through yet. Fingers crossed I reckon I will be okay I am just struggling with the wait like alot of people.

    Xx

  • Hope you hear encouraging news soon.

Personally really struggling....6 days since biospy and the waiting time is awful. Can't wait to hopefully put this behind me. Is it normal to wish people would stop fussing? I didn't tell my family but my partner told them. I would most rather not have bothered them.  It might not be malignant and might be just some silly infection.  Or is it bad and that's why the doctor was so quick to do the biospy but didn't explain their real concern? The sitting wondering what the results are is awful torture.  I wish i could just move on but it feels like I'm stuck in some worry vacuum atm. I know worry never helps but here I am. Sorry I am wasting your time.

  • Hi,

I had an oral biopsy before Xmas and got my results via the follow up appointment a month later, the call for it came 3 weeks after the biopsy. I was extremely nervous at the biopsy apt  but as I was leaving the nurse did say to me the longer it take to call you back the better as if it was anything serious they'd call for you quicker, obviously don't know how true this is but it might be a good sign for you x

  • I thought i would comment i too are waiting for mouth biopsies results, had mine done on 20.01.22 and received a appt letter this morning for two weeks time, i was thinking that's great, can't be anything serious or they would have got me in sooner but after reading the above thread, i am not so confident now. The wait has been awful but in a way i would rather a little wait while they run the checks than a false result. i suppose sometimes it just takes time. the hospital i am with was fanastic at getting me in quick, they were sent the referral at 3.45pm and i had a call the next day to go in the day after. Brilliant service. I wish every one of you good luck and keeping fingers crossed for you all

  • Two weeks is about average, I’ve had lots of biopsies on things like lymph nodes and it’s usually about two weeks. I think my oral one was a bit longer because it was over Xmas and it’s a very busy clinic with long waiting times, try not to worry.

    Good luck with everything
