Ongoing investigation into abnormal bleeding

So for the last 5 weeks I have had constant bleeding combined with pelvic pain, period pains and cramps in both legs. I have had the pelvic pain and cramping for a few months then the bleeding started. I’ve had a transvaginal scan which showed nothing abnormal, 5mm endo lining and some follicles on my ovaries but nothing to explain the bleeding. I had an internal last week with my gp but she couldn’t see much because of the bleeding. I’ve had a blood test this morning so won’t get results for another week or so. I’m feeling really worried and nervous about the results especially seeing as the bleeding is showing no signs of stopping. Just wondering if anyone else has had this or has any advice? Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I was sorry to learn about your situation.

The symptoms you describe are not uncommon in pre menopausal women. They are more likely to be caused by conditions other than cancer such as hormonal imbalance and infection. But, I cannot say that this is the situation in your case.

Your GP may consider doing tests to rule out urinary and vaginal infections, including those for sexually transmitted disease such as chlamydia. Vaginal infections can spread into the pelvis to cause chronic pelvic pain and irregular vaginal bleeding. If you are on the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) this may need to be reviewed. There is more about pelvic pain on the NHS Choices website on the link here.

In women over 25 it is standard practice to have a smear test if this is overdue. If after tests your GP is not sure what is causing your symptoms they may refer to a hospital specialist, in most cases this will be a gynaecologist.

I hope you know more about your situation soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
