One stop breast clinic - they do all the tests there?

I received my appointment last week for the breast clinic. Before I did, a couple of days before I called the doctors surgery and asked the receptionist what sort of referral I had as I was unsure on wait times. The receptionist told me it was an urgent referral to the one stop breast clinic. On my understanding this is a breast clinic where they do appropriate testing all in one day if necessary right? My only worry is, my appointment is at 6.30 pm, isn't this quite late to be pulling out loads of testing? On my Letter it just states which consultant I am seeing. Nothing about tests or how long approximately I will be there. Just seems very late in the day even just to see a consultant. And experiences or anyone else had something similar. Thankyou x

  • Hello Mumma123

You're right in thinking that a one-stop breast clinic typically offers examinations, scans and possibly biopsies on the same day.

I think it's important to remember that the NHS is moving away from the historical Monday to Friday 9 to 5 routine of appointments. There are often clinics and appointments now given in the evenings and at weekends. With waiting lists increasing due to the pandemic it's possible that your local hospital is running additional clinics as well to try and see patients as soon as possible.

Hopefully the team will be in a position to give you some answers and reassurance at the appointment.

    Best wishes

  • Thankyou for taking the time to reply to me, hopefully I will have some answers on Monday, can only hope a positive outcome!!

  • Hi there Mumma123. I had my referral appointment at the breast clinic for a breast lump last week. Mine was in the morning and my letter said to allow 3-4 hours but they actually did the physical examination, mammogram, ultrasound and core biopsy all in just over an hour. My appointment for the results is on 16th April and the waiting is definitely the worst bit! I do think they do more evening appointments these days. Good luck with your appointment. X

  • Hello Nix123

Thankyou for responding to me. Sor try to hear you are in this situation too!! My letter didn't say anything about time etc or how long to expect to be there, but as you said it was all done in about an hour so hopefully I will make it home in time before the kids go to bed! Thankfully my local breast clinic is at the hospital which is only a 10 minute drive from me. Did they give you hope but telling you what it may be? Not Too long to wait for your results now. I hope it all turns out positive for you. Good luck xx

  • Hi Mumma123.

I just checked my letter and the 3-4 hours was actually mentioned in an accompanying patient information leaflet, not the actual letter. I think that is a standard maximum time, depending on how busy they are and what tests you have to have. My breast clinic is called a 'one stop' clinic which means they try to do everything in one visit. I'm lucky that mine is local too.

My situation is that I felt a lump in my right breast, just below my nipple, saw my doc at the end of March who referred me to the breast clinic within two weeks, on 1st April. At the clinic they could feel the lump in the physical examination so I had a mammogram on both breasts and an ultrasound on the right breast. The radiologist said it was in the milk ducts and it was solid mass and she did an ultrasound guided core biopsy straight away and took three samples. She didn't really give much away, just said we needed to get it tested.

I was then seen again by the nurse who had previously done the physical examination who said the results would be back in two weeks and I got a follow up appointment for 16th April (a bit longer than usual because of Easter). She said we'd have to wait for the results but did mention an intraductal papilloma as a possibity. She said that if is that then that is benign but that it would still likely be removed with surgery. But I 'd need to wait for the results to be sure.

There were so many questions I didn't ask but thought of afterwards! I wish I'd asked the size of the lump for example. I think I found it all a bit daunting which is why I just got quietly in with it! I am finding it quite hard to think about anything else at the moment, even though I know that the majority of lumps are benign. It is a comfort being able to chat to others in a similar situation though.  ️

What is your journey so far? X

  • Oh strange, I just checked mine again and there's definitely nothing. I didn't get a leaflet, just the date of the appointment and a questionnaire about my situation.

your situation sounds very similar to mine. Good luck for your appointment I hope it is just something similar like that. It's always the way isn't it, go in with loads of questions forget them and remember when you leave! I'm sure I will be the same.

    my Journey so far...

about 4 weeks ago I had a sharp pain through my (pierced) nipple, I quite often get it since it being pierced back in august. But this time it was slightly stronger. I pushed onto it and found the pea size lump next to the piercing under the areola. Pretty sure it's not rock hard but firm and pretty sure it moves as I can press on it and the I can't feel it until it comes back to the surface. It's painless, but I have pain in both breasts. I don't see any other change. I left it 2 weeks and then called the doctor and he referred me to the breast clinic, no examination, I have my appointment on Monday at 6.30 pm, really hoping it's nothing serious! X

  • Monday will soon come around. I hope they are able to give you some answers and reassurance on the day as it's the waiting that is the worst! This two weeks between my appointment and my results is really dragging! I'm just trying to keep in mind that the vast majority of lumps are benign and most of us are worrying over nothing! Lots of luck for your appointment on Monday and let us know how you get along. X

  • Yes! Not long now at all, the nerves are definitely kicking in! I really hope so too! Oh god I bet it is. I'm holding on to hope with that too and the fact it's moveable but who knows!
Thankyou and I will do xx

  • [@Mumma123]‍ im Inthe same situation and i have my appointment on monday at 1.55pm, my letter does say allow 2-3 hrs and to bring a book ect. I have been worrying for the past two weeks but i know there is an end in sight come monday either way.  I had an abcess in my left breast ( i have a skin condition which means i get these regularly but it just wasnt clearing up and another appeared) to cut a long story ‍  short after i begged my GP for a face to face appointment i got one and she did a full exam and found 2 lumps in the same breast deep in the tissues i hadnt discovered they  where nowhere near the abcess and unrelated. I have had just over 2 weeks to wait for my appointment date. its been a tough 2 weeks and on occasions i have been convinced of cancer, but im going to worry when i have to ( thats what im telling myself!)

i had to go to same clinic 18 months ago and they did all tests on that appointment, i had mammogram and ultrasound. Didnt need biopsy as it wass showing as fatty tissue but these are new lumps in another area .

Good luck for monday let me know how you go on xx

  • Hi [@louiser]‍

thankyou for responding to me and I'm sorry to hear you are going through this aswell! Glad to hear though that you also have an appointment on Monday. I am starting to get a bit concerned that I am only seeing a consultant on Monday as my letter doesn't state anything other than an appointment with a consultant, nothing else! I can't wait longer for other testing im going out of my mind with worry! I really hope it is nothing to worry about for you. It's horrible waiting to find out. It's a good way to think, worry when you need to. I too am convinced I have cancer, but I have read a few people write, it's not cancer until proven so go about your life and live like normal.
I also have been to the breast clinic about 4 years ago for the other breast, a fibroadenoma, which like you I had an ultrasound only but no biopsy! This was all done on the day but in the day, I'm just worried about this one as it is so late in the day! How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

thabkyou, and good luck to you too, please come back and update on here xx
