One for the Ladies

I have just finished my pelvic radiotherapy and have been told that in 4 weeks I will need to use a dilator (which could be for as long as 3 years!).  Do any of you have any experience of this and of lubricating cream.  The Gyney nurses at the hospital have given me some samples but would be interested in others experiences.  The two they recommend are "yes" and "sylk".

I have very sensative skin and have to be careful with shower gels etc so I am concerned in case I get a reaction - probably overworrying about this.

thanks if anyone can help.

  • Hello river56,

That's definitely a question for the ladies! And I hope some ladies here will have some tips for you on this.

In the meantime, I found some advice on our site specifically on dilators which may be useful for you. You can find out more on using vaginal dilators here.

If you have any question, don't hesitate also to give our nurses a ring on 0808 800 4040 (it's free from UK landlines and most mobiles) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie

  • Thankyou Lucie you are a little treasure.

  • Hi.River 56 I started using a dilator two weeks after I finished pelvic radio therapy in April this year. Its used to prevent scar tissue building up which can make it difficult to carry out follow up examinations. It comes with full instructions in a discreet little box with some samples of a lubricant you can use. I havn't had any problems so far, with the lubricant. I just do it as part of mmy morning routine. I think there are several gels to choose from and they are for use in that area.
