Oncotype DX testing

Morning lovely ladies. Can I ask everyone that is IDC stage 1,2,or3 ER positive and HER negative if at time of surgery was a sample sent for the above test. Reading about it it says it's used for early invasive ductal carcinoma to predict chance of reaccurance. If test above 25 need chemo. Nothing was said at result and treatment planning meeting. So was  wondering if I should ask about it. TIA xxx

I cant recommend this test enough my private medical paid this but it's offered on nhs I even offered to pay myself . My score was under 10

however the downside is the wait again and also can work both ways a high score can play on the mind forever

it's personal choice but for me it saved my mental health and anxiety for the better

    good luck in deciding

this is discussed with my oncologist I mentioned it to my consultant but was told I needed results from lumpectomy and node biopsy first but I was clear that I wasn't going anywhere and demanded this test as I needed to no the inside of my tumour and what was involved deeper than I was given , I heard about it first here on this site so was I wasn't stopping as I knew such test was available the cost is around £3200 but I took my card with me but thankfully I didn't pay afterwards.

  • Thanks Lara.

Haven't been offered it. Only found out about it as a friend had double mastectomy in November and commented to me yesterday as bout the long wait for it's results to come back. Wasn't mentioned in my results and treatment planning meeting. So assume I either am not going to be offered it or will be discussed at my operation in a couple of weeks time.  Or do you think I should ask? X

  • Hi Pauline,

It's definitely worth an ask, although they will likely not be able to give you a definitive answer until after you've had your surgery. The prerequisites are quite strict, and they will get more information from your tumour after the surgery has been done.

It wasn't mentioned to me before surgery, but at my follow up a couple of weeks after I was told it had gone to be tested (lymph nodes clear, but tumour was a grade 3, not grade 2 as they initially thought). Unfortunately my score came back borderline, which meant the decision was mine, but as I am younger I thought it was worth going ahead with chemo.

Like Lara said, the wait is also something to think about as I found that a challenge!

    I hope that helps x

  • Hi Amy thanks for your reply. I think I will ask and see what is said. My friend was boardline and in her 50s she was 26 but they still have her chemo. It will be interesting to see what is said. I know it's very expensive to do but from what I have read NHS are prepared to pay for it and it's advice for all early IDC.  Hope you are on the mend. Xx

as Amy said the wait is agonising I'm not going to lie I thought I'd opened a can of worms and thought do I really want to no after all but I was told by my oncologist that chemo is overused on times and in many cases has little benefit on certain grades types depends if lymph involved ect the list is endless and in my case I was told that chemo would not benefit me even 1 %

amy hope you are doing well big hugs to you .

  • Hi I was the same, I had a grade 2 IDC 2 cm no lymph node involvement ER positive HER negative breast cancer last year. At the biopsies I was a grade 2. I was 57 at the time post menopausal so the oncotype test that they sent after surgery needed a score of below 25 to avoid chemo, mine came back at 35. I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy and now on letrozole for 5 years.following the surgery it turned out I had grade 3 IDC.

The consultant send my tumour for testing without hesitation as the ER positive node negative fulfills the criteria for this test. My oncotype score shown that I would benefit by 15 % from having chemo. I would do anything to prevent reoccurrence so like I say I had 6 rounds of FEC chemo.

I am back at work and have no real side effects from any of the treatment and am enjoying my life again.

    Best wishes Andrea xxx
