Oesophageal Cancer Pre diagnosis raised PTH

Hi everyone, I have recently had an endoscopy due to intermittent difficulty swallowing bread, rice, pasta etc.
During the procedure, the Consultant found, hiatus hernia, Barrars epithelium, inflammation etc.  Biopsies were taken and hope to get results soon.

Meanwhile, I had a random blood test by local health centre, to monitor Parathyroid Hormone, which has been kept in check (hyperparathyroidism), with fault Vit D.
But I recieved a call yesterday to say my PTH level is raised.   Have found some old research papers that state this can be an imitation Parathyroid Hormine indicator due to a malignant cancer tumour.

I made this connection and asked for GP to call back, but it's Friday and no one around.

Just wondered if this strange connection was relevant to anyone else?

Mant thanks, and kind wishes to everyone on this forum.

Thanks

Angie

  • Hello TheSeaTheSea and welcome to the forum.

Hopefully some of our members who have had raised parathyroid hormone levels will share their experiences with you soon but if you'd like to discuss the connection you've found with one of our cancer nurses you can get in touch with them next week on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to help and answer any questions you have.

I hope this helps and you hear back from your GP next week.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

And thanks for the reply.  I will hopefully get results from Biopsy next week, and will mention the PTH.

  • Hi there I have had similar issues to yourself over the years. I have had the symptoms return in June this year and was sent for blood tests that showed up elevated levels of PTH and calcium. I was then referred to the ENT clinic on an urgent 2ww, who put a telescopic camera down my nose and into my throat. Then sent me for an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy as i have a thyroid nodule on right side and a cyst (previously had nodule removed in 2009). Results came back as inconclusive and was sent for another FNA biopsy, but after scanning my neck this radiographer wasn't happy to repeat the FNA and i was referred for a nuclear medicine scan of my parathyroid.

I have just been for the results on Saturday and they told me that i have a tumour on my parathyroid gland and will require surgery. ENT have discharged me now have to wait for a referral to endocrinology to see a thyroid specialist in a different hospital.

Hope you get some answers soon. I am now on week 18 since blood test results and had lots of *** ups along the way, and been to 3 different hospitals soon to be 4. Just hope I hear something soon and am not waiting months.

    Take care.

  • Hi Natalie,

You are showing great resilience despite the time this process has taken. I have read that removal of parathyroid tumours can completely cure symptoms.  I hope that's your experience.

    best wishes

  • Yes, i hope so. Can I just ask where you read the old research you were talking about in your post?

    Kind regards.

  • Hi Natalie,

I can't find the exact paper I read.  But I searched under 'raised PTH level esophagael'.

  • I had another appointment today with a head and neck surgeon. I am now having to go through further investigation to get a clearer understanding of the thyroid nodule and cyst I have.

They are happy that the tumour on my parathyroid gland is benign, but before having surgery to remove that, they want to check the other thyroid issues.

I have bloods and urine tests on Monday and will be getting an mri scan and another ultrasound of thyroid and probably a further needle biopsy. These are being carried out at a diffferent hospital that specialises more in this area.

They want to see if i need anything other than my parathyroid gland removing. Said that an undetermined ultrasound biopsy can have between a 15-30% chance of being thyroid cancer. I have already had one done, which came back as this. They will carry out a lobectomy as well as the parathyroid gland removal if needed then during one operation. I will have a follow-up appointment in 4 weeks time.

Hope you have managed to get the answers you needed.

    Regards.

    Natalie.
