Normal Smear and HPV negative but CIN3

Hi,

I had a smear in Dec 2022 and bled profusely throughout the smear, so much so, the nurse had to get the doctor in to help stem the bleeding. Also had post coital bleeding a few times before the smear. Results for smear and HPV were both normal and negative. Because of the abnormal bleeding the Doctor sent me for a womb scan and biopsy and were both normal so sent for a colposcopy. 4 weeks later my results show CIN3. How is this even possible after negative smear and HPV. I now have to have a LLETZ at the end of March. Now having very heavy periods that are lasting 2 weeks and low back ache.....worried is not the word. If it wasn't for the abnormal bleeding I would never have been sent for Colposcopy because of the 'normal' results. Anybody else been in a similar situation???

  • Welcome to the forum NP49 although I'm sorry to hear your colposcopy showed you have CIN3 despite having clear results from your cervical screening, womb scan and biopsy.

Unfortunately I can't explain how this has happened but we do have a very well informed team of cancer nurses that may be able to help so if you'd like to discuss this with them, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5pm. They will do all they can to help and answer any other questions you may have at this time.

Hopefully some of our members will be along soon to offer their thoughts and advice but in the meantime, we're thinking of you NP49 and wishing you all the best with your LLETZ.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking how you got on? Your circumstances are similar to mine, I had a negative HPV result from my smear in late January this year, despite the nurse seeing an area on my cervix that didn't look right.  I'd had bleeding after sex, the nurse made me bleed on contact so booked me in with a GP next day.  She said probably cervical erosion but we will see how the smear goes.  So when it came back fine I was so relieved but the bleeding was still there after sex, so back to the GP who had a look herself.  That's when I got a 2ww pathway to a colposcopy.  The  gynaecologist fetched her consultant for advice as my cervix went white with the acid.  Four biopsies taken, bled absolutely loads, and I'm waiting on the results.  It's concerning that all my smears have been negative in the past but clearly visible abnormalities.  It's horrible waiting.  I've still got stomach and back pain from the biopsies that were taken over two weeks ago, so now I'm convinced it's something sinister.
hope I've not gone on too long.  X
