No treatment after blood clot: no hormone blockers ER+

Hello,

ive not posted for a while, I had a lumpectomy last May, started tamoxifen in June, finished rads in August, cancer was very small.

4 weeks ago I developed a blood clot in my arm, told to stop tamoxifen straight away and put on thinners. Clot all gone now, spoke to oncologist yesterday who has said he isn't going to prescribe anything else in the place of tamoxifen. I said I would rather take something and he said the benefit of tamoxifen was tiny, 0.7%, he said with cancers as small as mine surgery usually is all you need.

i am terrified that I'm not doing enough to stop it coming back, my husband said I need to trust the experts. I still have very regular periods, I'm almost 49, I asked about having my ovaries removed and he said he would be happy to discuss this once the virus situation is dealt with.

Does anyone else not take hormone blockers for ER+ breast cancer, anything positive would be great to hear.

Thanks for reading x

  • Hello Ploppy,

I am sorry to hear you developed a blood clot in your arm. You did absolutely the right thing in talking to your oncologist and following his advice to stop the Tamoxifen straight away. It's great that the clot is now gone. I can understand why you are feeling worried still but your husband has a point that you can trust the experts - they are in the best position to advise you on this. Perhaps if you are still concerned, you could try and see another specialist just to get a second opinion?  You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page

Our nurses are also only a free phone call away so don't hesitate to give them a call on this number 0808 800 4040 and talk things through with them - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that the virus situation settles down soon and that you can see your specialist again to discuss the best course of action also with regards to your ovaries.

Hopefully you will hear from other ladies on the forum who are in a similar situation to you and have been advised not to take hormone blockers for ER+ breast cancer.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi ploppy                                                              lovely to hear from you again. Though not the reason you're on. Thought I'd reply to send you to beginning again. Alot of the ladies aren't on very much lately what with family at home being more busy than normal.

But hopefully someone will see your message and reply. Hope you get something sorted soon, best wishes for the future.
