No appetite and weight loss

Hi. This is my first post and I'm getting increasingly worried about my Dad who since seeing him 2 weeks ago (I live and work 3 hrs away) has lost considerable amounts of weight and where he had a good appetite before, he now has none whatsoever. He is not having any chemo as it was mutually deemed inappropriate for him. I'm fearful that the loss of appetite and extreme fatigue is the next stage of deterioration. Or could it just be a blip and he will get his appetite back. Any advice would be gratefully received as I'm really worried about him.

  • Hi,  I have no idea whether what your father is experiencing is deterioration or not, But with his lack of appetite I would suggest you get some Resource drinks (Nestle's product).  We get our supply through our local hospital, which is about half the cost of our pharmacy.  Check with his Dr/hospital first.  My hubby has 2 every day and with the small amount of food he eats is actually gaining a little weight at present.  It is understandable you are extremely worried about your Dad.  Is it possible for you to see/speak with his Dr to voice your concerns?  Take care.  Sue

  • Hi

My husband has experienced the same issues.  We were prescribed fortisips and calogen -available from the chemist.  Also he has been on steroids which give a temporary appetite and energy boost.  Although he is now in the process of coming off them they enabled him to put some weight on and have a decent quality of life for a few weeks.  It may be worth talking to his doctor or macmillan nurse to see if its an option.

Sadly its only temporary but the psychological and physical boost has helped for a few weeks.

I hope this helps.  I know its incredibly difficult seeing a loved one suffer.

    Big hugs.
