NHS Cancer test delays

Someone asked why diagnostic tests are taking so long. This article sets out at least one of the reasons.

  • That is the unfortunate truth of the matter. Things are only going to get worse.

The NHS needs more efficiency, money and more resources. Unfortuantely the Gov wants to go the other way, and now with Brexit things can only become a lot worse.

I sometimes wonder what teffect he wait times have on the outcome of treatment.

  • I agree with two out of the three. The NHS can't offer much more in the way of "efficiencies" - the efficiency drive started in 2006/07 under Labour and all the easy savings have been made. If I read one more time about how someone read something in a newspaper that said that the NHS pays more for bog roll than they charge at Poundland and I will scream!

Staff morale is at an all time low, not surprising as most staff have not had a pay rise in real terms since 2010. the NHS workforce is ageing with a demographic time bomb as a large group of people are due to retire in the next few years. The nursing bursaries are being axed and fewer people are qualifying due to the massive debts resulting from University education. Medical students are particularly affected with five years worth of tuition fees at over £9,000 per year plus about £4,000 per year just for rent. Add to that the hugely expensive compulsory reading list and food and you're looking at debts of over £80,000 before they've qualified to be paid less per hour as a junior doctor than Lidl pay for stacking shelves.

The later the diagnosis, the poorer the outcome. Unfortunately it takes over a year for mortality rates to be published and improvements in the effectiveness of treatments may well mask the impact of delayed treatment. In my area (Cheshire and Merseyside) survival rates fell last year - I'm not sure what the National position is. www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/.../merseyside-cancer-survival-rates-getting-9223195

  • Survival rates in the UK are a shame to say the least.

Antiquated equipment, staff streched to the limits, and constant cuts. It is sickening. FUrther the incentives that GP's get for NOT reffering paitents adds to the shame. Hospitals and Trusts constantly cutting back on services et al.. I don't even know where or how we can find a solution. Once Brexit kicks in.. it is going to get a lot worse. Just how many of the docs, nurses et al are non-Brits?

If you are working class.. I guess your life is worth nothing.

  • Hi Afy,

About 5% of all NHS staff are from the EU and about 10% of doctors. There are some facts about this at www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/.../fact-check-migration-and-nhs-staff

The solution is quite simple. As a country we need to accept that more money is needed for social care and for the NHS. Money that can be raised either by increasing taxation or by making sure that the tax that should be paid by people is actually collected. Most people are on PAYE so they don't have an option, but so much money is hidden in tax havens aided and abetted by the banks and others that there is a massive shortfall. One Premier League manager alone is alleged to have avoided enough tax this year to pay for seven NHS nurses for their entire careers.

I try to avoid politics in this forum but I am leaning towards the conspiracy theory that the NHS is being set up to fail by being deliberately deprived of resources.

    Best wishes

  • Dave, you have forgotten the so called "Self Employed",who do not declare their actual earnings.Nor,have you remembered all the other people that are on Benefit or other such income from the Tax Payer, but the hidden money being taken from The Tax Payers, are those who come into the country ane claim benefits under one name in one Town/City and claim the same benefits once again in another location. At the moment The uk is it,s worst enemy and The Government does for whatever reason do nothing about it.UK,is far too soft and countries around the world know it.

The onle way to improve the UK,is for everyone to have compusury Identification Cards, and for them to be checked everywhere that is deemed a "FREEBIE" for all those who are loading their pockets with our money, whilst The Government looks the other way.An Election is about to happen and no Member of Parliament has mentioned Identification Cards, which is why most of the MP, have very little Brain Power, but very good at talking "B----S---",for hours.

So back to the NHS--The only way to get more money for it so it does not collapse,is to tighten up all the othe areas as well as the NHS,so we are not given our money away to outsiders.
