Next steps after diagnosis

Hello,

A family member has recently (2 weeks ago) been diagnosed with rectal cancer. They have been told that they will need 5 weeks of chemoradiation and then surgery to remove the tumour.

How long will they expect to wait until treatment starts? They have been told they need an appointment with the oncologist first but haven't been given a date yet.

  • Hello Wiccabicca

I'm sorry to hear that your family member has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer. Undoubtedly this will be an anxious time and natural that there will be some questions about the next steps in the treatment process.

It's fairly normal for people to wait a few weeks, or sometimes longer, after the initial diagnosis before active treatment starts. It may be that further appointments with a specialist need to be organised, such as you've already mentioned, or that additional scans and information are needed before treatment can begin. Hopefully, your family member won't have to wait too long but if there are any concerns then certainly get in touch with the Consultant's secretary or the nurse specialist if they've been allocated one.

In the meantime, if you want to talk anything through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I send our best wishes for your family members' treatment and hope that all goes smoothly.
