Newly Diagnosed Oral Cancer

Hello to all.

I have been looking in for several weeks and have replied to a couple of posts, but this is my first post.

I had two biopsies in a very awkward area of the tongue. I got the results yesterday and it is cancer.

The consultant examined the tumour and said he thinks tonsil is also involved,he also examined an area on hard palate and has arranged for a further biopsy on this area along with the usual CT scans etc.

It has only began to sink in to my befuddled brain today just how extensive this may turn out to be. I have lost my husband to cancer so am facing this journey alone. Needless to say I am shell shocked, numb, cant think straight.

To make matters worse I have only recently moved to a totally unsuitable home in an area I know no-one. Due to another incurable health condition I am having to give up driving and this is making me very isolated.

I have a grown up family that I dont see very often but, I am very independant and would never want to be a burden on them. I am hoping someone comes along that can share their similar experiences as I have read some very thoughtful and kind respones on here.

  • Hi Hazel.

    Thank you for your reply.

I dont have much info yet as I have further tests to have. So far Ive been told tongue biopsies showed scc p16. Consultant said surgery followed by radiotherapy. MDT are meeting in two weeks after tests are completed. So I wont know anymore untill middle of Feb. Feels a long slow road so far.

When he mentioned the tonsil I thought hey ho been here before, they were adament my hubby had it in tonsil so they whipped them out and then said no its not. It turned out to be in the parotid gland.

    Take care and keep well.

  • Hi Hazel

Is that what P16 means? He didnt say + or -. I will ask when I go for biopsy next week.

I think I should make a note of questions to ask,my mind was a blank yesterday.

I was at neurology the day before and got bad news there too so in all its been alot to take this week.

    Thanks again.

  • Sounds like it be to me abbreviated versions of h p v 16 + which is the cervical cancer virus that can attack the tonsils   Over 80% of population have it at any one time but if your immune system drops in it pops 90% male we as females are rare and seems like yiuve had enough in your plate recently . Read my blog it may help you

hazel sorry about neurological problem as well , yes write down questions it’s the only way try and get someone to go with you as well

  • Hi Hazel,

I was in reading your blog weeks ago :-) Hmm mineworkers pension thats a sore subject for me I gave up fighting them on that one.

I was quite dismayed when I read about your experience at dental surgery. You should have put a complaint in writing to them.I would have!

I had my palate biopsy yesterday painful! Followed by CT scan later in evening,a long day!

I asked about p16 they were not very forthcoming though. Three of them all giving their opinion at same time losing it in the science of histopathlogy. The young dr said I will be given a full appraisal of my situation at my next appointment with the consultant. Its what I expected, they cannot really tell you anything thats the domain of the consultant.

Hope you are continuing to improve keep up the good fight.xx

  • Hi Clara

please keep me up to date about your progress
