Newly Diagnosed

Hi Everyone

I'm 56 and found a lump in my breast 2 weeks ago and saw a consultant 2 days ago had mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy of breast and axillary. The consultant has told me I have cancer before the biopsy results are through. I'm trusting this is correct and not some sort of test?

  • Hi there ...

It is unusual to be told after scan .. usually they wait for biopsies to come back .. I had mine last year, and had a grade 3 ... had a masectomy July last year .... and although I was terrified at the beginning, looking back the worst part was those early days .. when your mind is overwhelmed with "what ifs"

There's lots of us breast lasses on here ... all different stages and different treatments ... but wer all holding on ... and together wer trying to kick cancers *** ... coz it wants you to buckle ...but it is doable.  So try not to over panic .. treatment has come a long way .. you'll find a lot of support on here ..

But hold on till you get the results from biopsy... and know there's always someone here who understands and KNOWS  what it's like as we've been there ...  sending you a vertual hug ... Chrissie xx

  • Hi sorry u find yourself here. As Chrissie says many of us either at same point as you or been there done that. I am the latter. I was told straight away when the biopsy was taken that she was confident to say we were looking at a cancer diagnosis. I was given formal results a wk later which confirmed she was right.

Everyone is different and even hospitals seem to differ from one to another. Keeping this in mind... my personal experience was:- It was 13 wks and 2 days from date of diagnosis to last day of treatment. Consisted of Daycase Lumpectomy and 15 sessions over 3 wks radiotherapy...the rest was appointments with consultants and waiting between appointments.

best pearls of wisdom I was given was live in the moment and ban the what ifs they are not helpful. I know... this is easier said than done.

I hope your appointment is as good as it can be..and know u are not alone we are here if u want or need us.

sending a big virtual hug lass you can do this ️

  • Thanks Sandra 123 that is comforting to hear your experience. I do practice mindfulness daily it really helps :D

  • Thanks Chrissie hugs to you too xxx

  • Hi NannyJosie,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, thankfully you've come to the right place and, as you've already seen, there are loads of women on here that have been through it and can support you through it.  I've found this place invaluable.

In most cases biopsy results are needed to say you have cancer, but not all cases.  The Radiologist told me immediately after my mammogram and ultrasound that I had breast cancer and that it was at least stage 2.  Sometimes the presentation on scans is enough for them to know, although they will still always do the biopsy, after all more information is needed anyway (what hormones are 'fuelling' your cancer etc.).  Mine turned out to be stage 3 and I think he reckoned that but needed a more detailed scan to size it more accurately so he didn't say stage 3 at that time.

Medical specialists are quick to hold back information if there are further tests needed for diagnosis as they don't like to worry people, so I highly doubt he/she would have said anything if they weren't 100% sure.  I suspect you're just in the same boat as me and that how the lump was presented was enough evidence.

I hope all your staging tests come back as good as they possibly can and that your team get a treatment plan up and running asap.

We'll be here for you if you have any questions, rants, or anything else to share.

  • Hi

I was diagnosed yesterday after biopsy came back.

Ductal invasive carcinoma grade 2 meaning it’s growing slowly. So options are breast conservation surgery or mastectomy. I’m thinking of the breast conservation surgery. Although they want to do radiation afterwards..

id wait for the results although the waiting is stressful.

youll then have facts to deal with instead of “what ifs”

big hugs . Let me know how to get on xx

  • Hi millymay

    sorry u about yr diagnosis.

i had 2 lumps lobular and ducal both invasive. See above for my timescale for lumpectomy nd radiotherapy. I am 14 mths post surgery now nd doing well. I used to look at my boob every day after surgery but that eases off nd hadn’t really looked at it for a while... until yesterday- in the shower. I really struggled to find the scar! My boob is of course smaller than the other ( I had 2 lumps removed so more tissue)  but....I don’t put anything in bra to compensate and don’t worry that it is particularly noticeable.... even when wearing close fitting tops. Remember this is my experience and everyone is different.

The op was not as big a deal as I had made it out t b in my head. For me.... home same day, 2 paracetamols that night was the only pain relief I ever needed. Shops nd pub for food next day. No pain but was tender... u know... didn’t want it knocked ;-)

Whatever decision u make... u can do this. It actually gets a bit easier on the mind once u have had yr op.

sending hugs lass... take care ️
