Newbie - Colorectal diagnosis with Peritoneal Metastases

HI all, I'm Lee from York.

I'm 42 and have just been diagnosed with Colorectal cancer with the added bonus of Peritoneal Metastases. So not to do things by half,I was told at an initial consultation after MRE, CT and eventual biospy that I had bowel cancer with it spreading to the abdomen, so it is advanced.

Not sure what stage it is at and I am due to see my Oncologist for the first time tomorrow where the plan will be to put me on chemo. The care plan is palliative care rather than cure apparently.

Despite that, I feel absolutely fine. I enjoy good health (althoguh I lost 3 stone in weight) and I have no pain and am still doing my day job and have no plans to stop that. Pretty much business as usual for me at the moment.

A small ray of hope has arisen though after discovering the Christie Hospital in that it appears they may actually perform a surgery for my condition that icreases the 5 year survival rate from 5% to 45%. I am therefore going to be asking for a 2nd opinion/ referral to the Christie tomorrow when I see my Oncologist.

I'm lucky to have the support of my family, friends and employer.

At the moment I feel a bit like, what's all the fuss about, but accept the days will grow darker eventually.

  • Good luck Lee .I liked the way you helped someone earlier and I think you are dead right to try and find out and do as much as possible to help yourself treat this disease , do everything you can and then some

  • Hi Lee, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on 23rd december 2014, I had a stoma bag fitted january 23rd and then chemo for 3months,I had a bowel resection on 23 july, they told me I didnt need a chemo mop up as they had got all the cancer, unfortunately I slipped through the net and never recieved my ct scan until the following february, which they lost, I never recieved my results until july and the cancer had returned in the peritoneal, I startedvchemo last august and went for a scan 20th december and results on 22nd. Inever expected to be told they couldnt find any cancer and was in shock for a few days thinking they had made a mistake I am having another 4 cycles to make sure there is no cancer left and hopefullynI will have the miracle that I have been praying for. Didnt want to be writing every little detail as I am sure you have enough going on in your head at the moment, Just writing to let you know that chemo and doing everything they throw at you can work, It can be pretty daunting not knowing what to expect but if I can donit then I am sure you can.1day at a time as they say. Have had bad days but the good days outway that, I hope everything goes ok for you and once you have a treatment plan in place I am sure you will feel more positive moving forward, take care and let us know how you are getting on. sending you big hugs. By the way my name is Susan and I am 58. x
