new to this and confused

good evening everyone my name is valerie and im new to this forum, right now im full of mixed thoughts, emotions and everything is too much to consume. if it start from the beginning and i try to be brief i basically went to my gp last week to discuss that i had not had a period in 2 months and that i was getting concerned as i didnt seem myself, so the gp sent me for a blood test to rule out perimenopause so the same evening my gp rang and told me to go to a&e as my haemaglobin level was at critically low 6.3 this was wednesday by the sunday it had dropped to 5.9 i then had a blood transfusion and an iron infusion, that was one thing then on friday just gone i had an transvaginal and pelvic ultrasound this is where my mind goes crazy the technician told me there was nothing found just the usual missing parts eg right ovary+ tube and partial left ovary and nothing else though they couldnt explain why i was there in the first place, anyway friday evening i get a text message from gp saying i was to be referred to gynae dept for futher tests, the scan results tell me i have a thickened endometrium (31mm), echogenic foci in endometrial cavity (16x6x9mm) feeder vessel is seen appearances consistent with an endometrial polyp. my question is what does this all mean, im so worried anyone please advise????

  • Hi Valerie,

I might be able to help as I was a nurse. The endometrial thickening means the lining of the womb is thicker than it should be could be caused by perimenopause/ menopause. The echogenic foci are just light spots that might be insignificant. The polyp is a growth in the uterus and are often benign. the feeder vessels mean it has blood vessels and is unlikely to be cancerous as cancer would look different on ultrasound. It is right to refer you to a gynaecologist as they will do more tests and a hysteroscopy (a small scope through your belly button) and biopsy of the thickening and perhaps removal of the polyp. Your GP should've asked to see you so that you could ask questions,it's really bad that you've just been sent a text, You could make an appointment with them to talk the results over. These types of things can be quite common in older women but need to be investigated. Hope that helps. I had a friend who had abnormal bleeding and thickening and she had those tests and they came back clear, hope that helps xxx

  • Thank you for your knowledge it's just I can access my patient files and they have used the fast track suspected cancer form to rush my appt, I feel so bloated and not right in that area. But thank you once again for your help

  • Yes they use the fast track or 2 week wait for any abnormal scans as that's the criteria for it. Those words'suspected cancer' always sound scarey but it's good they've done that as it speeds up your tests being done and you don't have to wait too long. Take care xxx
