New lumps

In March, I went and had a ultrasound on my breast due a lump I found. They told me it was a prominent rib ( because I was "skinny"  and I felt like nothing was wrong.
fast forward to 2 weeks ago, and my nipple is inverted, discharging, another lump in my armpit and Breast cancer is in my family ( maternal side).

I was referred to the same centre ans had my appointment today, the GP when referring me said I'd have either a mammogram or a biopsy on the armpit lump. Nope. I had a physical examination ans she told me it was normal and it's only noticeable because I'm " skinny".

I KNOW something is wrong. My gut is telling me. I feel so let down. I just want an actual breast screening. I'm 22. I don't know what to do :(

  • Hi and thanks for the post

Breast cancer at 22 is pretty unusual and as your breasts are still too dense for a mammogram to be able to interpret results fully, they are not done in people under the age of 40.

Ultrasounds can be done though, but a biopsy only would be done if the ultrasound showed anything of concern. Nipple discharge can be down to infection, blocked duct or if you squeeze your nipple, you can sometimes express some fluid, though it's best not to.

Many people now will have members of the family who will have had a cancer diagnosis, but it won't mean that you will too. There's more about the familial side of breast cancer here

I can imagine this is all pretty stressful for you as you're worried that something is wrong. The doctors at the clinic are experienced at looking at people with breast problems though, and if there was a concerning feature, more than likely this would have been picked up and followed through.

You can discuss the report that will come through to the GP shortly and see what it says, as there may be more information there that may explain things in a more detailed way. You can also go over the clinic  appointment with the GP and see what they say. If they think you need a further review, they can always then refer you back with a note, or send you for an ultrasound at the x-ray department and not breast clinic if it's under your arm.

The only alternative which may be costly, is to go and see a private breast specialist in your area.

I hope you get some information soon

    All the best

    Wanda
