New here - worries about partner

Hey, hoping to get a bit of support and just need to chat really, my partner is 55 and has smoked since he was 9...... the last 6-12 months he has had symptoms that have for worse lately, I've been asking him to go to the docs for mornha but you know men!

he has chest pain and breathlessness that comes and goes top of left chest , shoulder pain and this has now became puns n needles and pains in hand and top of back and now spreading to right shoulder . He has a chest X-ray tomorrow and tbh I'm worried sick. We talk about the symptoms but no one dare mention the C word , just wondering what others think and what would happen next  if the chest X-ray shows anything , thanks

  • Hi Jenny, I'm not a medic but know the drill. If the X Ray shows something you will be referred for further tests. And even if it doesn't, which would of course be excellent news, it is still important that they get to the bottom of your partner's symptoms. So keep pushing until you get answers. Best wishes, Harry

  • Hi Jenny,

I just wanted to give you my support as I have had a recent diagnosis of lung cancer.

ive got nothing to add to what Harry has said. If the x-ray showed anything to worry about I think they would act quite quickly. I was called in to the GP the next morning. But after that, the tests take a few weeks.

Hoping it's not cancer and thinking of you and your husband tomorrow.

  • Thanks , will let you know how it goes

  • Hi Jenny,

It started in October with me feeling really tired for a week or so and then a wheeze and cough ( unproductive). I have never had a wheeze before and was a bit worried so went to the GP and was given antibiotics and an inhaler. 10 days later no change so I went back and got stronger antibiotics and a steroid inhaler. At some point during this time I started  getting very high fevers which lasted for an hour or so in the evenings, every few days. Symptoms continued so I went back again. The GP said it was "proper flu" and to give it 2 more weeks. After two weeks the symptoms were worse so I went back and they sent me for an x-ray which I had that day at the hospital. I was referred to a chest specialist who did a CT saman, a bronchoscope and a PET scan. After all the scans/ tests I had a large 8x8x6 cm tumour in my left lung with itralobular nodal involvement ( nodes inside the lung) and some cells on the outside surface of the lung ( these were found after surgery) - hence I am stage 4. 3 weeks later my lung was removed.

I think the symptoms depend a lot on the size and position of the tumour.

I hope you get the x-ray result back soon and it's clear. The waiting and worrying is very hard I know.

    Take care

  • Hi Joy

oh, wow! You have been through it! Can I ask if you smoke? What treatment will they do for you next?

Sam's' symptoms started mid summer really, wheezy, chest pain top of lung, then his left hand went numb for a couple of hours, it is slightly complicated by the fact he recently had a fall on the same shoulder so not sure what symptoms are what any more, but I guess the x-ray Will show one way or another, he's been such a heavy smoker i can't help but worry, he has also lost all his muscle tone in his arms and has had periods of being sick, more so in the last 6 months than the last 23 years i think -  we've put it down to getting older and greasy food but who knows, one thing is for sure I will be glad when this x-ray is done this afternoon

    take care

  • Hi Jenny,

No I don't smoke although I have a type of (rare) cancer which affects smokers in 90% of cases. I smoked a bit at uni and into my early twenties so I thought it must be down to that,  but they discovered a gene mutation in my cancer ( again a very rare one for lung cancer) and that is the "cause". I am now on targeted gene therapy. It's just started and I'm having tests to see if I'm tolerating it.

Regarding Sam's symptoms I would only know that so many lung cancer symptoms are also symptoms of other things. If you have to see a consultant you would find out more, but I've only got google to go on like everyone else and it's not recommended!

You need the X-ray result now to get over this stress. It will come.

Wishing you the best of luck. Let me know the outcome which I hope is good.

  • Hi Joy

So Sam went for his x-ray on a week last Friday and blood tests yesterday. The doctors receptionist told him yesterday the x-ray was 'borderline' -  and then made him an appt for Friday morning to see the doctor for his blood test results. they've now called and said not to come in on Friday for the appt the doctor will call him - all very confusing!

    Jenny

  • Hi Jenny,

Well on the plus side, they are not saying cancer. I hope the doctor explains to your satisfaction what "borderline" means and what the next steps are.
As Harry said before you need to keep pushing if the symptoms are ongoing.

    Good luck. Keep us posted.
