New diagnosis, advice needed please.

My husband is very distressed after being diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer and a Gleeson score of 3 + 3.

Although we are led to believe that this is a low grade cancer my husband has been severley affected by the news and is depressed and anxious.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Golfir,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am glad that you found us early on and am sure that you will find the site very helpful as your husband travels his cancer journey.

No matter how low grade a diagnosis is, it is always a tremendous shock to get a cancer diagnosis of any sort. Fear of the unknown has a big part to play and he is bound to have concerns over what the future holds for him.

If his depression is of concern, it might be worth mentioning this to his doctor, who can prescribe an anti-depressive drug for a short period, to give him time to come to terms with it. I was very much against any medication to start with, but had to give in on my second cancer diagnosis. I am just taking a mild anti-depressive, but it has made all the difference to how I feel and how I am now coping with things.

If you keep in touch with us here and let us know how things are going for him, I am sure that others who have been through what he has yet to face will come forward and help guide and support him through his cancer journey. Sadly, cancer affects not just the patient, but his entire family. There may also be times when you will need independant support too. You may not want to worry hubby or family for fear of distressing them further, but there is always someone here to listen and to help you along the way.

You may find it helpful to use the search engine on the blue bar at the top of this page. If you insert your key words this will bring up previous posts on the subject. You may find some useful advice from some of these.

Please keep in touch and let us know how things are going. Has your husband started any treatment yet?

Remember that we are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards

    Jolamine xx
