Nerves during radiotherapy

After my breast conserving surgery I started radiotherapy

had the first one , it went ok but I got quite anxious about keeping still - went for my second and they tried three times to get the position right, but then said they would have to leave the treatment for that day

I can feel my body shaking but I can't seem to stop it - I feel such a failure ! I want the treatment and I want to get through it - what can I do

any suggestions would be greatly received

  • Hello there,

Ive just finished my radiotherapy last Friday but know what you mean about having to stay still...on my last one, the machine went wrong and they had to reset it so I was in the same position for 20 mins!

Try and relax as much as you can and instead of thinking of what's happening, try distracting yourself with mundane thoughts lol...what are we having for tea, am i sorted for Christmas, that row we had in 2011...before you know it, it'll be over. You could. Try some deep controlled breathing if the problem is actually getting in position. It's tough, I know.

    Good luck

  • Hi and thanks for posting

Hopefully some people will get back to you as to how they coped with trying to keep still during their radiotherapy sessions. It's common to feel anxious and to move and the more you try and keep still the worse it becomes.

The following NHS audiotapes can help some people, especially the ones on anxiety and relaxation - you can try doing these at home and then apply them in the radiotherapy unit.

The following exercise may also be of some help.

How do I relax my muscles NHS?

    Quick muscle relaxation

Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Slowly breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Make a fist, squeezing your hand tightly.

Hold this for a few seconds, noticing the tension.

Slowly open your fingers and feel the difference – notice the tension leaving.

There are a number of exercises you can look at online and some may be of better help than others.

I hope the next session goes well, but if it becomes a problem, you can ask discuss it with the specialist or GP to see if they can give you something to help you relax for the session.

I hope the next session is better for you.

Good luck and all the best,

    Wanda
