Nephew diagnosed with Animal-Type Melanoma - Confused

Hello.

My nephew (9 year old) was recently diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma - Animal-type Melanoma.

We as a family are really confused and over-whelmed. There is hardly any research and very limited known cases worldwide.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of melanoma and if so, could you share any info such as treatment and likely prognosis?

Hi Lgr,
I'm sorry to hear about your young nephew. I've been a melanoma patient for several years and I know very little about this type of melanoma, however I have put out an enquiry within the melanoma patient community and I will get back to you, hopefully with some information. All I do know is that it is considered to have less chance of spreading or being invasive than other types of melanoma so the prognosis is brighter.

Thank you Angie.
We're currently waiting for a plastic surgeon to contact us to cut out the affected area and some healthy tissue. We're hoping after reconstructive skin graft this will be the end of it - no plans made further than this at this stage xx
