Need advice on tongue cancer please

Hi, first time posting.

I'll start from the beginning.. about 18 months ago my mum started having bad stomach pain and was quite worried. She didn't see a doctor. She's lost a LOT of weight.. like she looks like skin and bone almost. Over the last few months she's complained about pain in her one breast (hasn't seen a doctor) and now for the last few weeks she's had a sore throat, swollen gland and just feels tired and generally unwell.

She did see a doctor this time and today she's been to have a camera down her throat. Whatever it is is on her tongue. They've said that they think it's cancer but she's still got to wait for the results. They've also referred her to have a biopsy. If it makes any difference, her father had throat cancer (found in post mortem) but it was a heart attack that killed him.

Does this sound like Cancer? And does it sound like it could be all Over? I'd like people's honest opinions please. Don't be worried about upsetting me. Sorry about the long post and thank you in advance.

  • Hi there - I really don't know whether or not your mum has cancer - only the people who have looked at the results of the tests will know that. That's the worst thing - waiting for the results - it really is an awful time. I know that from personal experience & I'm afraid there isn't an easy way to deal with it except to keep as busy as you can.

Try, if you possibly can, not to get ahead of yourself & take one step at a time. Your mum has had the endoscopy, (step 1). Get the biopsy (step 2) Deal with what the results are (step 3) Don't get ahead of yourself otherwise you'll make yourself unwell & that's the last thing you or your mum need.

People will be along here to give your advice & support & I think you'll find that will help. In the meantime try to keep busy doing everyday stuff & look after yourself in terms of eating properly etc so you can be fit to keep your mum's spirits up.

Very good luck & no doubt we'll be in touch again. Chin up sweetie I'll bet you're stronger than you think.

  • Hi Anna,

Your poor mum, sounds like she is having the worst time of it.

Try not to jump ahead of the tests, and biopsy is the only sure way of knowing one way or the other. I think its very unfortunate that they have said they`think` its cancer. This can only have added to yours and mums stress and worry.

Hopefully they will have an answer to your mums stomach troubles after the camera.

I can only repeat what was said to me and that was head and neck cancer tends to stay in the head and neck as a rule. So try not to think of `could it be all over`. She will have other tests CT/MRI and hopefully they will rule things out for her.

We are always around if you need to touch base. Stay strong. xx
