Neck lump

Long post.....

Around 7 months ago I had an aching in my neck and by accident found a small lump on the left side of my neck. I waited a couple of weeks before calling my gp. I had a telephone appointment where they said it sounded like a lymph node and to wait a few more weeks. I actually waited several months before calling again. This time I was offered a face to face appointment. The gp initially couldn't feel it but  when I pointed it out she agreed it was likely a lymph node but  that since I'd had no known illness it needs further investigation, she requested full bloods and said she would refer me to head and neck. I had my bloods which came back fine and have just been waiting for head and neck to contact. On Friday the gp secretary  called to see if I had received an appointment  she explained they had requested as a 2 week urgent referral and if I havent had an appointment by the end of next week I must call them back to chase. This has made me panic and worry, looking online suggests they only do this if they suspect its cancer. I'm 33 with 3 children and feeling increasingly anxious, every ache or pain I find myself questioning if it's because it's that which I know is very irrational. I feel very alone

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear you've been anxious about the lump you've found.

I would try not to read too much into what your GP's secretary has said, I've tried to do that many times and it just leads to more anxiety and I'm usually very wrong!

Many referrals are seen on a 2 week pathway, look at it another way, you will be seen quickly and hopefully your mind put at ease.

I know a couple of people who have been to see a specialist about a swollen lymph node in the neck and it has turned out to be nothing.

I know it's easier said than done as I worry a lot but please try not to panic and do not google!! x
