  • Hi Jessie.

Nice to hear from one of us. I had a total laryngectomy 3 years ago. besides the odd chest infection I am allright, have you got a voice valve in or didnt they fit them back then, we dont seem to get many people like us on here, I dont know whether its because of this type of cancer, that put them off talking about it, I talk to a few people and help them with different things that I can help them with, it seems that different parts of the country give different care after you get sent home and different infomation.

How do you manage being a neck breather, I still put a bib on when I go out, dont like to show people my stoma.

I am 66 ans a few of the people are a lot younger than me, I also find that there is a lot more women.

If you want a chat get back to me or email me, it will be interesting to see what life is like for someone who has had it done so long ago. one thing the specialist said it is unlikly that the cancer will come back after this op. that is nice to know.

    Best wishes.

  • HI joe ninty

It was great to find some one like me i was beginning to  think i was the only one

even when i went for check ups at the hospital i never saw any larys

well i was treated at my gp's for a blocked saliva gland for 2 years then a differant dr sent me to

the hospital and that is when they told me i had cancer i was given the choice to have the op or

try radiotherapy i didnt want to loose my voice so  i went for the radiotherapy it shrunk it a bit but

not enough as it had been left to long i had 5 cancers above -behind and below my voice box so it

had to be removed unfortunatly the radiotherapy shrunk my swallow so much that i now have trouble

swallowing most of my food has to be done in a blender but never mind i am still here and yes i have

a voice valve and have to press my hmv to speak i am 69 years old now and had my op when i was 60

and yes i was told that the cancer would NOT return so now every day is a bonus

  • Hi Jessie.

You sound like me, I know a few larys from the hospital but they seem to not want to talk about there cancer, I have emails off a few we exchange them as it is more private if they want to discuss things,

Your story is like mine started with a sore throat didnt go away chemist ask to get a referal to the hospital to see someone, found a white spot on my vocal cord had biopsy then it moved to other side, 6 weeks radio another biopsy then told cancer, told needed total op.in hospital 10 weeks 5 in 2 out 5 in.

now just get on with life after all the things we have to do to start the day.

nice to hear you are well, with a bit of luck we might get more neck breathers to join us.

Have you had any trouble over the years that has worried you, the thing that gets to me is the lack of back up we get when we leave the hospital, had anyone been to see if you need anything since leaving the hospital with a rig in and had a district nurse to come and see to it havent seen anyone.

If you would like my email address to talk private about things just ask.

Nice to have a chat about something that we have in common.

    best of health.
