Nauseous during chemo treatment

Does anyone know how to help the feeling of nausea during the chemo treatment? Despite being on anti sickness tablets, my loved one feels very sick for days after his high dose. And I was wondering if there are any tips that has helped folk when they were feeling so sick?

  • Thank you for reply. The hospital just gave the anti sickness. I just wasn’t sure if there were advice or self help guides that could help someone through the constant feeling of sickness through  the chemo.

    Wish you well through it

    kind regards

  • Hi scms when I got my tablets they only gave me three days supply, I have to wait till I felt not right before I took them. I'm afraid you just have to live with it I hope you are still eating OK does food taste like cardboard??

  • Hi, sorry to hear about your sickness, there is nothing worse, I know the feeling well. I would call your hospital unit as they kept telling me to call with any problems and they don’t want you being sick. There are loads of anti sickness drugs, I had mine changed to a stronger one and it made a big difference. I kept taking them faithfully the week I had my chemo as they told me it takes a while to get in your system so took them 3 times a day on chemo week. I also ate a lot of ginger biscuits, hope this helps x

  • Hi my doctor did put me on the stronger ones trouble is I've got a hernia I can be sick very easily I just have to live with it I also have other medical problems which I have to take things for. I have to take them with as little drink as possible then hope they don't come up within two hours or I have to take some more.

  • Hi, so sorry for you, it’s such a horrible feeling, hope your treatment goes in quickly for you. X

  • Hi there,

Is your partner being sick or is just feeling nauseus?  I only ask because with my first chemo I had nausea but very little sickness.  In the end I mainly tackled the nausea with mind over matter.  I think we hear so much about chemo causing sickness that when we end up on chemo our brain thinks "oh well I should feel sick now" and creates nausea even if there was none.

That said, on this chemo I have no nausea at all but loads of sickness and am now on a plethora of drugs to try and keep fluids in me.  I have oradispensible ondansetron (because taking a sip of water with the tablet makes me bring the tablet back up), so if he is having sickness that might help.  Tablets that dissolver in the mouth (like Buccal/Buccastem) can help also.  But, as I'm sure you know, any medication needs to be run by his oncologist.

Like many people I nibbled on ginger biscuits when nauseus last year, and also used ginger tea.  Weirdly fizzy, sugary drinks can help (probably due to making you feel less weak I guess) and I'm drinking San Pellegrino's Lemon and Mint each day at the moment as mint can be good for sickness.  It's counterintuitive for me as I usually hate really sweet things, but getting the energy into my body does seem to make a difference to how I feel overall.  Annoyingly when we get so hungry our stomach's hurt that can make us feel more nauseus.  Also, if he is going to be sick it's best to have something in there to come out, much as it's horrible :( it gives more protection to the oesophagus.

Anyway, I'm wittering, sorry.  Just some thoughts and ideas, hope something helps.  But do try mind over matter if it is nausea without the sickness, it just means telling yourself over and over for a few minutes that you feel fine and actually believing it.  For me last year it worked more days than not, on the other days I was actually sick.  Each cycle was then easier as my brain no longer expected to feel sick.
