My mum has breast cancer and I’m struggling

Hi my name is Rosie and I'm 15,

I recently got told that my mother has got breast cancer stage 2. I've been told that's early and its a good thing that it's been detected so early but I can't help but feel frightened no matter what people say to me. I keep on trying to distract myself with school and friends however I don't want many people to know, I feel the need to stay strong for my mum when I'm at home and yet still feel the same at school because not many people know.

if anyone else has experience anything similar and has any advice on how to approach this horrible situation.

  • Hi Rosie

Sorry to hear about your mum but the good news it has been caught early and the survival rates are excellent. I know cancer can be scary especially as your are so young. As a mum myself I would not expect my son to be strong for me and I would want him to be able to talk about his fears/thoughts etc to whoever he felt was a good listener and would support him. You're far too young to put this all on your shoulders so why not talk to people you trust about how you feel - even if its just your GP or a charity like macMillan who has a counselling service for young people like you. Its not healthy to bottle things up. Take care x
