Mum's lung cancer diagnosis and planned treatment

Hello Everyone,

My beautiful Mum had her EBUS procedure and we attended the appointment to receive the results. Mum has lung cancer in her right lung and lymph nodes, left lymph nodes are clear. They were unsure if cancer in left lung, the previous CT Scan showed no signs of cancer from neck to pelvic area. They were debating on going ahead with a PET Scan to get a closer look. The staff had their team meeting today and the Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse called to say they decided not to go ahead with the PET Scan. A marker had shown up (forgot to ask if this was in bloods or biopsy of lymph nodes) making it more likely that there is cancer in the left lung so they are preassuming there is and acting as such. My Mum's biopsy showed a mutation that is EGFR, 10% of people have this and it is suitable for a chemo tablet - Osimertinib. The Nurse confirmed it is a very good chemo treatment and responds well to people with the EGFR mutation. Due to my Mum's age it is preferable treatment to chemotherapy in the vein, they want to keep Mum as well as possible with less side affects whilst still controlling and hopefully shrinking the cancer. Scans every 3 months to check how it is doing. We have an appointment with the Oncologist 10th March and Mum can start chemo after this appointment.

If there is anyone who has had, is having or knows anyone who has taken this type of chemo tablet and was diagnosed with EGFR mutation lung cancer it would be great to hear how it went and what to expect etc.

I 'think' I heard the Nurse say they will hope this chemo tablet will shrink the cancer but now I am doubting myself and wonder if it will be controlled only. Something I need to ask at appointment.

Any advice and support gratefully receved, thank you all so much.

Jane

  • Hi Jane,

I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your Mum - I'm sure this must be an incredibly difficult time and I hope you're getting on OK.

I can see you have also posted elsewhere on the forum and received a reply from one of our nurses, which hopefully has helped a little in terms of your question about the treatment.

It is good to hear that your Mum is able to receive this treatment and that the nurse has mentioned it is a good option for her.

Try to make the most of the appointment in March - make a note of any and all questions ahead of it, and then keep a note of the answers too. Hopefully following that and once the treatment starts, things will feel a little better in terms of taking the necessary next steps.

Take care and wishing you all the best,

  • Thanks Ben for your reply, yes I will take a note of questions and record answers when we see Oncologist in March.
