Mum's been offered chemo but told nothing more can be done

Hi

Mymum has had radiotherapy and sugery on her lung and we thought she was getting some test results prior to being signposted for chemo...

It turned out to be a meeting, with a doctor she had never met telling her essentially that there was nothing further that they could do. The chemo would only 'contain' it.

So even though it won't treat the cancer or change anything, they are offering it her, not telling her she should have it to fight the cancer further. My mum is a fighter and feels like not having chemo is giving in, when it really isn't.

My mum doesn't know what to think and I aren't happy about how she's been advised as she isn't clear on the outcome for her in terms of her diagnosis and quality of life, will it buy her more time, how much does that equate to. She has more questions than answers.

She has been told to ring on Friday with a decision on chemo and in the meantime to ring a Macmillan nurse. I am obviously supporting my mum, but don't want to have her undergoing chemo and being very unwell, when she is Ok in herself now.

Is there a generally agreed time-line for 'nothing more that we can do for you'

Any advice?

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Ashleigh although I'm very sorry to hear the news your mum has been given and for the impact this has had.

I'm not sure if this is something that is available to you or that you have looked in to already, but if not, your mum could try getting a second opinion from another doctor.

Many members of our community have been in similar situations with their loved ones so you are not alone and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice.

If you'd like to speak with one of our cancer nurses about this, you're very welcome to do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. Our team are very friendly, and knowledgeable, and they will do all that they can to help you and your mum at this time.

We're thinking of you Ashleigh and wishing your mum all the best for tomorrow.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi

She spoke to her Macmillan nurse about her concerns and they emailed the doctor about it. She had to make a decision and has had her first round this week.

    Thanks for replying.
