Mum with advanced Alzheimer's now terminal cancer

Hi everyone I'm new to this forum ,my wee mum has had Alazimhers for the last ten years, and it has been a long heartbreaking journey. I have just been told she has ovarian cancer which has spread to her liver and spleen and probably also in the fluid in her lung. My mum is 79 and I'm devastated for her she has suffered enough. She doesn't seem to be in pain at the minute but she can't tell me due to Alazimhers. Nothing can be done for her now only pallavite care. I'm scared and shocked by this diagnosis I dont know how long mum has left she's sleeping all the time Dr says weeks. Please can someone give me some advice on how to cope with watching my mum go through this. I lost my dad a year ago. Lost my best friend in May this feels very unreal thanks for any advice .

  • Hello Cat66,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum - it is terrible that she is having to deal with Alzheimer's and that she has now been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It's so sad that she can't even communicate her pain due to Alzheimer's and that nothing can be done for her now apart from palliative care.

It's truly heartbreaking for you and those around her and it must be so hard to know that she only has weeks left. Poor you, you've been going through so much having lost your dad just a year ago and your best friend only a few months ago. Our website has useful information for family, friends and caregivers which has valuable tips on how to support someone with cancer and you can also find out more information on caring for the carer when someone is dying which will highlight how important it is to look after yourself when looking after a loved one who is terminally ill with cancer.  As your poor mum has advanced Alzheimer's as well as advanced cancer, she will have needs which will be specific to both conditions and if you would like to talk to our cancer nurses about anything, you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

You can also get in touch with the Alzheimer's Society as they may have some good tips for you to help you deal with the challenges that will be inherent to a patient who has been diagnosed with both Alzheimer's and cancer.

Hopefully others on the forum who have been through this before and also looked after a loved one in similar circumstances will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

We're thinking of you and your mum during this difficult time and we wanted you to know that you are not alone that others here will understand what you are going through.

    Best wishes,
