Mum just diagnosed with breast cancer

My mum had a lumpectomy and some lymph nodes removed 2 weeks ago. She saw the consultant today and was told the lymph nodes are at stage 3. She was then given a range of options including a trial where a computer chooses her treatment. The consultant didn't tell her what she needed to have to give her the best chance, just gave her loads of info and she has to go back in a week to decide. I can't understand this. My mum is the patient and knows nothing about cancer. The consultant is the expert but won't tell her what she needs. Am I being stupid here? Mum is so confused she just wants what is best for her. Had anyone else had this experience? Thank you

    Hi Simster,

I have heard of this happening before and it can be very confusing for the patient. However, there is such a thing as “patient choice” and I expect this is what your mum’s doctor is trying to do. Are you going to your mum’s next appointment with her? It is always beneficial to have someone with you when seeing a Consultant. Sometimes they can ask questions which the patient has forgotten or pick up on answers that she has forgotten. Going for an appointment such as this is very stressful and we can only recall a portion of information after the appointment.

Why don’t you and your mum get together over the week end and draw up a list of questions? Bring this with you to your appointment – many of us find that we have to do this.

With regard to treatment, you can explain to the consultant that your mum has been trying to decide on the best option, but doesn’t have the medical knowledge to reach a decision. Explain that she just wants the best treatment for her and ask for his guidance.

I hope that your mum gets on better this time. Please come back and let us know how things go.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
