Mum died after lung cancer got aggressive

A year ago Mum got diagnosed with Non small cell lung cancer with a massive slow growing 11.5cm tumour at the bottom of her left lung. They said she had had it a long time and she only had back pain as the tumour was rubbing on her nerve!  She had chemo which thankfully shrunk the tumour and she was scheduled for surgery and had a lobectomy. She Recovered well and had three appointments after and was given the all clear so we were really pleased although they gave her X-ray not ct scan which they should have done. After two months the pain in her back returned and we were worried so the doctor sent her for an X-ray and they said she had a chest infection then her bowel movement was not right after a bout a diarraroa then no movement for over a week. We said maybe it’s the anti biotics side effects. Mum got worse and stayed in bed a lot and still had the pain so we took her to a&e. They gave her a ct scan and confirmed that the cancer had returned in mums scar tissue and told her not to worry as she responded so well to the treatment before plus there’s new treatments out. After a very long wait she finally had x2 immunotherapy sessions and was scheduled to have it for two years. Mum got worse and was in and out of hospital and became very immobile and went downhill quickly. Her breathing got worse so again she went back to hospital. She had another ct scan which sadly showed cancer has gone into mums good lung and had progressed quite a bit and had Hit her stomach. They told us Mum had to be transferred to the UCH to have her fluid drained which will help with her breathing but Mum sadly died before they could do that.

My point is that we were never told that mums cancer was terminal and were always hopeful with her treatment plan so her death is a complete shock! Did immunotherapy make her cancer worse. Maybe Mum told the doctors not to tell her children she was dying as we were in the dark but they seemed to know what was happening. We have requested a meeting with doctors to ask unanswered questions. Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks

  • Hi and my heartfelt sadness on all of you, losing your mum ...

You sure had a hard journey to take , and it's such a shame they didn't do a c.t scan instead of an x ray early on ... l can see where your mum's team are coming from, when they had hoped the treatment just may have worked , how could they then say to you it was terminal... l think they have one of the most hardest jobs, anyone has ... so many times they are asked " how long does a patient have left, when in truth, some live much longer, some get taken much sooner ... l  can't imagine how they do a job day after day , giving good news to one patent, and the next one they havnt long ...

The pressure on hospital staff now is immense... yet day after day, they carry on ... my surgeon operated on me after a very long day in theatre... for my mastectomy,  at 3 the next morning l was rushed back to theatre with bleeding internally... next day l was so relieved l was still here ... and when l met my original surgeon, he was so worried, and l just said things happen, and I'm still here to tell the tale ... he is my star, and I've so much respect with how much they care ...

I know what you've been through is heartbraking, and my heart goes out to you, but I'm just saying, they can't see into the future ... and as long as they do all they can, spare a thought for the work they do ... maybe if the government gave them the resources to a growing cancer population, they would be less stressed ... that is just my opinion ... l have been blessed with a wonderfull oncology team ...

Sending you a big hug ...
