Mum diagnosed with colorectal cancer spread to liver/ lung

My mum is 85 and recently diagnosed with a large tumour in the rectum which has metastasis in liver and lungs.  We are devastated as gp had been treating her for over a year for piles and never sent her for further investigation.  Her surgeon is furious. She has just had a stoma bag fitted and is now home and recovering.  We havent seen oncologist yet but her cancer cant be cured, any treatment will be palliative. She doesn't really want chemo thinking her quality of life will be poor. I just wondered if anyone had been in a similar position and whether treatments had been better than expected or worse.  Thanks

  • Hello scousegit,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. It must have been a bit of a shock for everyone especially as she had been treated for over a year for piles and had never been sent for further investigation. I hope that she is recovering well at home after having her stoma bag fitted. It's a shame that there is only palliative treatment available in her case and I hope that you will hear from other members of our forum who have found themselves in a similar position. I am sure they will be happy to share their treatment experiences with you.

Should you have any questions or feel the need to talk things through with anyone, our cancer nurses are just a free phone call away. You can get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope your mum is ok and recovering well at home and that you get to see the oncologist soon to get some clarity on what to expect in the coming weeks.

    Best wishes,
