Multiple lumps in lower back. Very confused.

Hi guys, sorry to post again about all my lumps and bumps, i suffer horrendously from health anxiety and finding all this lumps has put my mind into overdrive. It helps me to write it all down on here and vent.

I’m growing increasingly concerned over multiple lumps that I have found in my lower back, just above the hips and near the dimples. They are on both sides of my back and almost mirror each other perfectly. I have counted between 8-10 lumps all varying in different shapes and sizes. Some of them feel like ovals and other feel quite flat with unclear edges. I went to the doctors about this and she said they were lymph nodes and nothing to worry about, which put me into a panic. I couldn’t understand how so many lumps could appear and the doctor just says “no worries it’s fine, just forget about it.”

The thing is, I have lymph nodes I can feel all over my body, and these don’t feel like lymph nodes at all. They are softer, more uneven and moveable. I did some research online and I found multiple doctors and people saying that there aren’t any lymph nodes in that area of the body?! Is this correct? Because now I don’t know what to believe. None the less, I am absolutely terrified and no matter how much I try to calm myself down I just can’t stop fixating on it. Does anyone else have lumps such as these on their lower back?

  • Hello again niknak18,

No need to apologize for posting I can totally understand why you are feeling the need to write here and how it can help to share your thoughts with others who may have had a similar experience before and I hope others who have had lumps like these on their lower back will come and share their story with you.

It's good you have shown these to your doctor but it does sound like you are still worried so perhaps you could ask to see another doctor just to get a second opinion. I know it is really hard to resist and we all do it but try not to do too much online research if you can as this is known to just exacerbate our anxieties. Do ask your doctor though when you see him/her whether it is an area of the body where there are lymph nodes.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you want to talk things through with them. Their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a ring!

I hope you get to the bottom of this soon - do come back here and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi!

i can completely understand your struggle, I too have major health anxiety and this has been one of the big things for me too. I’ve found the same lumps but one in particular my mind focusses on and makes me worry to the point that i can actually feel pain. I’d love to hear more about your story :) maybe you could get back to me?

  • Hi, just wanted to ask, how is everything going for you right now?

  • I have them for over six years they keep coming and going I had kidney infection just couple of years before that  it put me an idea where I thought its infections from kidney appearing from the back in the same time I was about 20 kilo over weight  and some time come to an idea where I have produced a lot fat and the fat outter from my body this way. And recently developed few of them in my back on left side just near the edge under left arm it has slightly affected my breathing and still ok not painful, but right now I have calf pain in my both legs it came last year I went to my Doctor they said you have produced fatty spots in the liver I was ok after few weeks walking excercise the pain disappeared, now come again it's few month now it comes and go several times a day it only goes away with express ibuprofen or deep massage or lay down on my face and and adult walk on my legs for few minutes in order for the pain to go way now I believe I have over-used my legs in work in the same time walking excessive few hours everyday to loose weight I have lost 15 kilos but my legs still painful and the lymph's are still there. i haven't mentioned to doctor but will talk to my doctor soon and this time I have to mention about lymph's as well as leg pain in the same time will update you with further info

  • Hi. Sounds like lipomas to me. Ask a physio to take a look as they will have felt a few.  I have lumps in my bum cheeks thighs and all over my ribs pretty sure they are all just fat.  I just need the willpower to lose weight now to help relieve the pain and sciatica.

  • Ask about them being 'harmless' lipomas.   lipomas can cause pain and can get big enough to press on things they shouldn't mine are giving me sciatica.   Good luck.

  • I felt a bump on my lower back that doubled in size over a few weeks. I have bad back pain when I sit which until finding the lump I put down to bad posture.
After coming here to check what others say. Worrying, worrying more I finally went to the docs. Due to covid I could only get a telephone appointment. The first thing the doc said to me is there is no lymph nodes in the area of the small of back. I struggled to find that information online. Sure it tells you you can feel them on the back of your neck when you type it into the google but couldn't find anything on back. So anyone with the same worry as me I hope this helps a little. After that the doctor just said to leave the lump alone and revisit it in a few months.
I asked to be referred to a private doctor at the local hospital as I wanted someone to actually look at me. At the hospital again the first thing the doctor/surgeon said was there is no lymph nodes there. Then after inspection he told me I was just fat. A Lipoma. I am probably 1 stone over weight so I am no way fat. I hope this again shows that you don't need to be fat to get a lipoma. The reason I wanted to post this here is I googled loads before the doctors and had myself worried sick. We all know we shouldn't but we do. However I very rarely see people coming back on their previous comments once they've finally been told what their lump or symptom is. So just wanted to say that my lump was harmless but caused me so much anxiety. My back pain has also pretty much disappeared as I'm no longer thinking of it 24/7

  • Hello iv recently noticed a family of these lumps on my lower bk left side the bk pain is getting worse around the area swelled up along with the side of my left leg too  but a bit lower had ultrasound but nothing showed up very confusing there still trying to find out whats up anyone else experianced something similar the pain is constant

  • Hi, I also have these weird lumps on my back. Ive been waiting for a diagnosis for six years, they've only just started taking me seriously because ive got one on my arm cutting off my circulation and one on my leg now too. Mine are also on my spine as well as at the sides causing sciatica and constant back ache. Im not overweight at all either but struggling to lose the bit of puppy fat I have due to breastfeeding lol. Im now being referred to a neurologist and a dermatologist, my doctor suggested corset training to help with posture for now. Will update once they see me. So scared im only 21 and have two daughters that rely on me. I dont know what their dad would do without me and no one understands why I'm so worried.. its got to the point I cant even go out anymore because of my backpain because they've left me for so long . Xx

  • Thanks for your post. It almost exactly describes my lump, I also low back pain when sitting just now! I think I'll moniter it for a few weeks and see what it does. (I also have a large lipoma on my shoulder so must be prone to them)
